Bugatti to develop a luxury sedan based on Audi A8 - new 16C Galibier?

VW Group wants to increase Bugatti's unit sales

Bugatti will develop a new luxury sedan for 2014, based on the Audi A8, according to a report by German magazine Der Spiegel.

The report also says that the VW Group board has decided that Bugatti will cease production of super sports coupes, such as the Veyron, by 2014 so that the luxury brand can focus on its new sedan model.

The specialty marque is not turning a profit for parent company Volkswagen AG, and will be required to pull its weight within the group and increase its sales volume significantly. Currently, Bugatti is the lowest volume VW Group brand.

But the new sedan model, while being built on a shared platform with the A8, may still take its inspiration from the 16C Galibier concept (pictured here) which Bugatti unveiled in 2009. Last year, a report from Autocar said that VW was considering taking the concept to production.

The 16C Galibier concept is an ultra-luxurious, all-wheel drive sedan powered by an 8.0 liter, 16-cylinder engine - the same power plant as in the Veyron but configured to produce an output somewhere between 800 PS (789 bhp / 588 kW) and the Veyron's 1000 PS (986 bhp / 735 kW).

Amazing that some posts have short memory. Has anyone forgotten about Bentley? The logical sense for Bugatti is to use Bentley Mulsanne chassis as base.

The 'Galibier' model name is more in keeping with Bugatti's Franco-Italian origins. However, the 16C Galibier is more a shooting brake (or hatch) body style than saloon/sedan. Besides the former is more upmarket than the latter's 'mainstream' connotation. If VW must put this beauty into production, it must be cost-effective and economically feasible; hence A8 platform plan. Hope it works!

Hmmm...makes sense...since Bentley's have become so common place after VW bought it they need something else for the super rich to drive.

Somehow i just don't see Bugatti ever being profitable to a large extent for the VW group. VW shot itself in the foot when they bought this liability!

Kdl: I think there is 8 to handle the 16 cylinders and 60 something valves in the car. Especially in something that heavy. Even with 1000hp the craziest thing here is the 8 exhausts!

Galibier will have carbon fibre chassis, so they will probably share suspension or hybrid technology with Audi A8...

they're gonna need to fit a more fuel efficient engine if they want to sell any sedans.

You can't call this concept a sedan. It's more a hatchback like the audi a7. It seems that the only thing vw wants is save money with every car they make. An a8 basis means no RWD and for me that's a must with cars like these.

Hope VW is not going to make it's future Bugatti sedan like BMW did with Rolls-Royce 760Li aka Ghost-)) P.S. to Valantise46. Don't be so sure about Bugatti's role in the VW Group. Maybe VW launched Veyron to make a big wow in the world, invested billions so maybe VW wants Bugatti brand to be profitable one day like they did with Bentley.

how does this stick with bmw and the ghost?rolls royce has already a ''flagship''the phantom, and decided to make a ''smaller'' car.bugatti is launched as a supercar company,so nothing to do with rolls royce...we are not in the 30's or 40's,when these 2 companies compete in the same segment...
