2012 Ford Focus EV teased
Debuts at CES
Ford has released the first teaser image of the 2012 Focus EV, ahead of its unveiling at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas in a few days, and not the Detroit Motor Show next week.
While the company is mum on details, the car will feature a glowing charging port surround and plenty of EV badging. It will be powered by a 23 kWh lithium-ion battery which will enable the Focus to travel approximately 100 miles (161 km) on a single charge.
On sale later this year, the Focus EV will be available in the following markets: Atlanta, Austin, Houston, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, New York, Orlando, Phoenix, Tucson, Portland, Raleigh Durham, Richmond, Seattle, and Washington, D.C.

I just can't understand these EVs... except some guys decided they are not anymore gonna pay for some other guys oil... I really hate when I have to charge my cell phones and I just try to imagine how's to be in a hurry and not able to use your car 'cause the damn thing isn't charged. And of course, in the end the EV will not polute less than its thermal equivalent. Do the maths.

Charlemagne is absolutely right. What you buy is a car which has an engine from a washing machine, a mileage of 160km, which is low and not enough even for Bulgaria. And nobody considers the CO2 and other pollution, caused by the factories that produce batteries and nobody speaks about the recycling of these batteries in a period of 10-15 years. And yes, If you need it and it is not charged - you`re banged. On the top, these cars are a huge customer of rare earth metals and the World has small deposits, China cut their export quota for a second time, Australia and Canada have some, but they are not enough. And when everybody`s car gets EV - estimate how much should we increase the energy production. How? ;)

Thank you for reading my mind! The costs are high, and no one seems willing to discuss them. I'm all for the EV of the future - perhaps with an IronOxide battery from BYD, it's cheaper to produce, can be recylcled, requires much less precious metal, and it addresses several issues with the NiMH/NiCad systems as they have trouble with high and low temps. Perhaps there is more to Ford's plan, maybe the batteries in this one are a breakthrough. Here's to hoping!

No need to panic everyone. People who read more than you are well aware of EV limitations. EVs are going to continue to improve, most of your concerns are being addressed by the manufacturers. So lets just calm down, petrol and diesel cars are still going to be around for quite a while. And yes most all rechargeable batteries are recyclable.

Annonced range of 160km usually means 80 to 100km in real conditions... and without using AC nor heater.
Concerning pollution, it depends where electricity is consumed (i.e. in France most comes from nuclear power plants)

The key word for EVs is efficiency. At least in teory. Combustion engine is good for about 25-35% efficiency at its best - electric motor about 90% or higher.
That means about 70% of the energy in the cars tank goes to waste (heat, noise, vibration...) in combustion engine car.
