Dutch magazine reports new RS4 already in development

Another report has surfaced raising the hopes that Audi will bring out an RS4 variant of the current A4 generation.

This time, it's Dutch car magazine Autovisie, which claims a top Audi official confirmed that there will indeed be an RS4 coming in the next two years - between 4 and 5 years into the current A4 generation.

A late-cycle introduction makes sense and is the usual modus operandi of automakers.

Interesting to note is that the source said that development of the next RS4 is already ongoing and that previous reports that denied there would be an RS4 came from another Audi source with no involvement in the project.

What would power a possible next RS4?

Potential condidates include a supercharged 3.0 liter TFSI V6 which currently produces 333 PS (245 kW / 329 bhp) in the current S4.  However, this is not enough considering the last RS4 had 420 PS (310 kW / 415 bhp) from a 4.2 liter V8 and an increase in output by 30% might be a stretch. Possible? Yes. Realistic? No.

More realistic is a tuned down version of the alleged 4.0 liter twin-turbo V8 rumored to have 600 PS (441 kW / 592 bhp) for the next RS6 and RS7.  Power output in the neighborhood of 450 to 500 PS (493 bhp / 367 kW) would be most appropriate for the RS4.

Special thanks to WCF community member smallq for the renderings!

And just like the old RS4 is will be slightly faster, yet far more expensive than the 4 year old M3. Audi fans will claim some kind of title for a whole 9 months or so. Lame. On top of that, they're going to dissapoint you with no manual option, just like the RS3 and RS5.

I agree with Garais87 - we do need a new RS4. The RS5 alone is not covering all the RS4 niche. Furthermore, as long as BMW, Mercedes, Lexus, etc. will make high performance sedans, the 4-door RS4 will make sense.

A few years ago the RS4 was arguably one of the best performance sedans. How can they consider not building a new one? Especially when they have a 592hp engine waiting in the wings. Mercedes and BMW watch out!

The only reason to stop making these models would be a bad sale. But I'm sure there are some customers waiting for next generation. I was strongly hoping than previous report was just a rumor. Don't let us down, Audi!

Audi gave the world a saloon and estate supercar! That's why Mercedes had to follow suit; BMW built an M3 saloon (as well as an M5 Touring) in Europe, but never officially brought it to the UK market! A 'saloon' has never 'sounded' so good! Not so sure about a coupe-only A5 though. The RS4 MUST make a comeback to keep all in check! Nice one Autovisie!!
