Ford has seen a 21 percent rise in domestic sales in 2010 compared to an overall market growth of 11 percent

Ford has rebounded in its home market to reclaim the number two spot in market share and total sales from Toyota.

Ford has increased its U.S. auto sales at nearly twice the market's growth rate, seeing a 21 percent rise in sales over a market that has grown by 11 percent, and boosting its share to 16.4 percent, from 15.3 percent last year and 14.2 percent in 2008.

"The last time Ford gained one or more points of market share was in the '80s...[and] it's the first time since 1993 that we have gained share in the U.S. back-to-back two years in a row," said George Pipas, Ford's market analyst.

Toyota overtook Ford earlier in the decade to become the second largest automaker in the U.S. market. The Japanese automaker's current share has fallen to 15.2 percent, behind that of number two Ford, and GM, whose 19.3 percent share reigns.

Ford sales have risen on the success of new models such as the Fiesta compact car and the F-150 full-sized pick up truck.

Looks like the anti-Toyota propaganda machine worked in the US. Well done Ford, I think.

All is fair in love and war. And yes the Japanese handle business like it is war.

Very true. I think Toyota are ahead of Ford in emerging markets and in Europe. But you're right, I don't think the Japanese would have given Ford a second thought had things been the other way round.

There certainly aren't behind Toyota in Europe, even in their most basketcase days they were spanking Toyota in the EU, currently only VW is ahead of them. They are behind in the emerging markets, but so is Toyota. Really Toyota's main strength is America and Asia/Oceania.

I think that this is excellent. There may still be room for Ford to go so far as quality and design, but there is absolutely no denying the tremendous improvement overall. There are several Ford vehicles that I would consider buying, and coming from me, this is huge praise. Go Ford!

I think Ford will likely increase its lead over Toyota as the new Focus arrives in a few months and the new C-Max arrives probably late summer/early fall 2011.

Ford HAD to step their game up with the Focus and Mondeo in particular especially since Toyota bloodied its nose in the American market! Has anyone seen the Focus Cosworth?! Is that awesome or what? Even their TDCI engines are cool. Coming from a petrol-head, that's high praise for real! GM need to take a leaf out of Ford's copybook and fast!

ford, chevrolet, are really improving here in Europe, the new design, quality, engines are just brilliant, on the other hand Toyota isn't doing great, they produce in Turkey, and their quality is worsening.
