Lotus City Car approved for production
Will tackle the Aston Martin Cygent
Lotus has confirmed plans to build a production version of the City Car concept.
Speaking with Car, CEO Dany Bahar said "We are doing this (the City Car) together with Proton and another OEM." While he declined to say who the other automaker was, he commented there will be "one for the Asian market, one for Europe and a sportier one."
Despite wearing a Lotus badge (in Europe at least), the City Car will be extensively developed by Proton. This is a bit of a bummer, but Lotus is focused on building several new sports cars such as the Elan, Esprit, and Elite.
No word on pricing, but the City Car will arrive in the UK in October 2013.

It doesn't matter it's going to be a Proton, I think we all expected that. So if Lotus is doinf the sporty one and Proton the Asian one who can we guess as the European partner? I am wondering Vauxhall/Opel. Saab?

It's all about those darn CAFE regulations, which, in my world, are completely ironic. They force car brands to improve their average gas mileage, so car makers build tons of these econoboxes to boost up their ratings. How does that help? All that did was put more cars on the road and gasoline in the air. Doesn't that go against environmentalists' pita bread grain? If I'm wrong someone explain it to me please.

I think the intention was to have manufacturers improve their engines' efficiency and making them more environmentally friendly. Manufacturers would have to spend resources on making cleaner fuel efficient cars, luxury and sportscar brands included.
In reality, manufacturers were looking for "smart" ways to bypass these regulations and so they spawned lots of cars with tiny engines instead of focusing on R&D (based on the reverse American principle bigger = more power, smaller = less fuel).
The fundamental problem is that it's impossible for sportscar manufacturers to meet the new regulation standards and so they have to result to either merging with a mainstream company (VW and Porsche) or buying a city car from another manufacturer (abomination Aston Martin IQ).
The road to hell is paved with good intentions and in the case above you are getting an overpriced Proton with a Lotus badge and some stitching...

I see a trend here... First come the Aston martin/Toyota Cygnet now this Lotus/Proton(cheaper than Hyundai) thing; and they both look like the smart car but with premium prices! No matter how much they are selling for and how much hype they are pumping into them these will always be Toyotas and Protons.

Smart and Mitsubishi-inspired design aside, this is Lotus going banzai micro-style! Malaysia's finest has a reason to be happy with this car! Mercedes Benz and Swatch must be laughing for causing a global trend craze!!
