Rumor mill: 600 HP for the Audi RS7?
2011 Audi A7 Sportback

2012 Audi RS7 may reach for the 600 horsepower mark to outdo the next BMW F10 M5

Could Audi really go all the way with the RS7 and leave behind the competition in the horsepower wars?

According to American car magazine Road & Track, rumor has it that Audi may be working on a 600 bhp (608 PS / 447 kW) RS7 performance variant of the A7. Under the bonnet would come a twin-turbo 4.0 liter V8 engineered to deliver that level of output.

That power quotient would surpass the expected output of the next BMW M5 (F10) which will come with a 4.4 liter-twin-turbo V8 producing 570 hp (425 kW / 578 PS).

To handle all that power, the RS7 will feature Audi's all-wheel drive Quattro system with a torque vectoring differential. The RS7 will also come with an adaptive suspension, larger front air intakes and 19 and 20-inch wheels.

The 2012 Audi RS7 is expected to debut late next year.

The VW RS7 would need at least 50Bhp(VW horses) more to stay with the equivalent BMW.When I had the 507 Bhp M5 I would comfortably beat the previous RS6 ABT which claimed to have 500BHP.The new M5 will likely have 555Bhp which with an expeort exhaust and chip tuning deliver 630Bhp as I have on my current X6 M. So up to G-Power to present the 850 BHP M5.Bring it on!

As evidenced by most of Audi's sport lineup, especially the S5, RS5, S6 and RS6, Audi needs more than brute horsepower to beat its RWD competition from M and AMG. The RS5 and RS6 produce nearly just as much, if not more HP than the M3, M5, C63 and E63, their major competitors. Still I have yet to see or read a single review in which the S/RS models were able to out-handle and ultimately out-rank the competition from Stuttgart and Munchen. I hope Audi will focus on the dynamics ie. handling, ride and fun factor to make a car that will absolutely blow the competition away instead of putting all their efforts into squeezing as much HP from a hopelessly downsized engine. As of recently, the R8 and B8 S4 have showed Audi's potential in dominating the opponents, and they will need to do more of that.

I can agree on what you say that the M's get better reviews on the fun factor, but on track RS6 and RS4 outhandles M's with the quattro, thats a fact, and have been showed in many reviews. BUT I agree in what you say concerning the R8, if they manage to do the same thing with this baby they will win!

Of the three premium automotive titans of Germany, Audi has the most teutonic engineering approach. Many of the recent reviews of the mark's lineup suggested an impecable level of driving aids' meticulousness at the expence of driver involvement. It is much like the German national football team of the 70s, 80s, and 90s: a deffencive, unentertaining, almost mechanized phylosophy that is only effective at the other end of the field when the opponent is thouroughly exhausted. This in essence conservative paradigm is still there in Audi, even though the national team moved on to a more exciting attacking football. The engines are still, and for many years shall be in front of the front axle, there will always be the quattro's all things to all wheels, and electronics will further expand the reach of their intrusive artificial inteligence. Even the most exciting Audi will always offer a ride, rather than a drive to its attache the driver, even if there are 600 ponis to be branded under the bonnett. Mark my point, however, were Audi by some miracle to move the engine behind the front axle in the next generation, hands down, my friends, it would very much leave Stuttgart and Munich in the wake. Time to play "total football."

They already did that with the R8. The reality is Audi knows what is doing, just look at their sales. BMW or Mercedes have nothing to even come close to the R8. They don't need every model to be a track car, most people who buy cars don't care about ring lap times, they care about quality, both ride and finish. I have to say that currently Audi has the best fit and finish and interiors of the germans. If you want performance, get the R8 or a Lamborghini, or Porsche.

Since B8 A4 and A5 the engines are no longer "in front" of the front axle. And do your really think that their objective is to be quicker on a race track with a street legal car? They all have their vision of things, and like thecarenthusiast wrote, Audi has the most engineering approach, look from where Audi is comming.

There, my friend, you are mistaken. The first vehicle to feature B8 architecture was A5/S5, all subsequent models such as the new A8, A7, and the upcomming A6, share in the same platform principle where the front axle was moved in front of the CLUTCH, but the engine block is still FULLY IN FRONT of the said axle.

Audi performance cars are too heavy....look at the RS6. What Audi do is build a car that tries to do everything and falls between 2 stools - because of quattro it adds a lot of weight to a car and you have to honestly question if 4wd is absolutely vital in everyday driving...quite frankly I don't think it is. The extra weight blunts the handling (in the dry) and makes the car less fuel efficient. Audi should really consider doing a rear wheel drive car. The RS5 is just too heavy and most magazines are saying it needs to be 200kg lighter. If they made it rear wheel drive only they could increase their profit margins and reduce their costs of production. If Porsche can make a Carrera in 2 or 4 wheel drive then Audi should be able to offer the RS5 in rear wheel drive - Lambo did it. If they don't do it then they will continue to get beaten in comparison tests with the M3 and M5's of this world. The whole quattro thing is only relevant if you are in parts of the world that are covered in snow most of the year.

To each his own! M cars are slated more at the track minded people. RS cars for an everyday usage sorta way. Look at the last M5 whose SMG gearbox people complained about when used in everyday situations unlike the auto in the RS6. The RS and M cars maybe in the same brackets and will thus be compared but they apeal to drivers with a different mindset. Ask yourself this; which car is likely to habour a hooligan driver... Anyway is this the engine Audi is developing with Bentley?

I accept your point but I'm not really referring to gearboxes....I am referring more to the rear wheel drive VS 4 wheel drive. I do think Audi have come along in leaps and bounds in recent times. In fact I wanted to buy an RS5 but when it is not even faster in a straight line than an M3 - is 200 kg heavier than an M3 - doesn't ride as well as an M3 then you have to address the balance. Audi's are capable of making great cars, ok they don't have to go down the rear wheel drive route but they can still make their cars more exciting. They could/should start by making them lighter...every other major manufacturer (Bentley not included) are doing their best to keep weight down to a minimum. It's just a pity that the lesser Audi's go to front wheel drive instead of rear wheel drive...then it just becomes a fancy volkwagen.

@ bmw2002m, i think the A7 is based on the A8. with Porsche in charge of large sedan development for the VW group, i bet the next RS7 will be a very nice car.

@bmw2002. As BMW is also introducing front wheel drive, will they now be fancy minis...? I agree with you on the weight saving but we should bear in mind that most of our perceptions about cars are based on what someone who has 'tested' the car says about rear wheel vs all wheel drive. But like i said before; to each his own.

A front wheel drive BMW would still have a BMW engine, all the lesser Audis use the VW engines hence my previous point although I wasn't aware that BMW have decided to go rear wheel drive. I suppose if it is more cost efficient then why not...it's not as if all the people out there driving 116i's and 120d's give a flying F%^& as to whether it is front or rear wheel drive but the guy who buys the 335i probably would pay more attention to that sort of thing.

Sorry bmw2002. Disagree with your anaolgy that a front wheel drive bmw is by default, a superior vehicle over a front-driver Audi or Mercedes simply becausde it has a BMW enginve. But if you say it to yourself enough times I guess that makes it so.

BMW has a common engine shared with renault and fiat that will go into the 1 series. Not all their engines are 100% bmw. There is no brand that is the Aryan brand, all brands share technology on some level.

@Uptohere. I am not saying one is better than the other...I am saying a front drive Audi with a small engine uses a VW engine, this is why I called it a fancy VW. BMW haven't yet taken engines from other companies and put them in their cars. VW's are great cars I'm just noting the engine is provided by VW. For the record I am NOT saying one is better than the other but I am saying rear wheel drive is better than front wheel drive regardless of the company/manufacturer.

With a sports diff, 60:40 power distribution and the front axle ahead of the engine i don't see how Quattro is so boring, if u've driven a front wheel drive Audi and the VW equivalent, u'll know Audi is not just a glorified VW... Some people can buy a car for the occasional track fun and for bragging rights, the rest buy cars which they can enjoy everyday irrespective of the climate or whether they carting the family around...
