BMW Vision EfficientDynamics gets a tentative price tag of ?150,000
BMW Vision EfficientDynamics prototype 05.11.2010

Price makes the model competitive with the upcoming Mercedes-Benz SLS E-Cell, which will be one of its main rivals

BMW has put an unofficial price tag on the upcoming Vision EfficientDynamics of no more than £150,000 (€176,624 / $235,000), according to Inside Line.

Ian Robertson, sales and marketing chief at BMW Group, told Inside Line at the launch of the BMW 1 Series M Coupe recently that the diesel-hybrid supercar's price would not exceed that amount when it makes its market debut in the spring of 2013.

That price makes the model competitive with the $250,000 (£160,000 / €187,000) upcoming Mercedes-Benz SLS E-Cell, which will be one of its main rivals.

The BMW Vision EfficientDynamics comes with a 3-cylinder diesel engine coupled to 'hybrid synchronous' electric motor at the front and another electric motor on the rear axle. Total output is 328 PS (241 kW / 323 bhp) and the 0 to 100 km/h sprint takes just 4.8 seconds. Consumption on the EU test cycle comes in at 3.76 liters/100 km (62.5 mpg US) and CO2 emissions are 99 g/km.

The model, which may come to be called the i100 or the i1, has a range of 50 km (31 miles) on electric power alone and a total range of 700 km (434 miles) with the 24 liter tank feeding the diesel unit.

Future cars are expensive! Well, still hoping to get that JETSON's flying car to beat this.

Not much really changes does it? They put all the new technology in the most expensive cars first and then as it gets better it gets cheaper then it filters down into cars like the 3, 5, and 6-series. I hate the waiting game. And I really hate when concept cars I like get pushed into the exotic car range, 150,000 is my limit.

This is a ridiculous price and it doesn't fit into the current model line up in the least. I think the Z8 is the most expensive car they have ever marketed, and they sold only a handful at $130K apiece. The author's prediction that it will be sold as an "i100" or something is apt, as the unusual styling/drivetrain and halo pricing will exclude it from the 1 3 5 7 scheme, as well as the ///M range. Look to the X5's brand strategy for an example of BMW segregating a new idea and then expanding on it once it takes hold. The tesla roadster launched at $100K and the 2.0 refresh will purportedly be sold for half of the original price. If i were a BMW marketing executive i would want the public to think it will be prohibitively expensive and be pleasantly surprised when it is priced to be obtainable. If the point is to fulfill their goals of greenwashing the entire industry, they would be well-advised to price them so that we actually see a few on the road...

This tune reminds me of past BMW's like the 507 and the 1st ///M1. Then who am I to question BMW's sales and marketing ideas when they sell so many cars. BMW clearly know what their customers want. I can't wait to see how this new car shapes up against the other new hybrid sports cars.
