An icon is launched

After years of anticipation and hype, the first Chevrolet Volts have left the factory and will begin arriving at dealerships shortly.

While a full roll out won't happen until early next year, the first 350 vehicles have been shipped to dealers in California, Texas, Washington D.C. and New York.

According to Tony DiSalle, Volt marketing director, "Today is a historic milestone for Chevrolet. We have redefined automotive transportation with the Volt, and soon the first customers will be able to experience gas-free commuting with the freedom to take an extended trip whenever or wherever they want."

In related news, the first retail Volt has been auctioned off for $225,000. GM hasn't released the name of the winning bidder, but the proceeds will be donated to the Detroit Public Schools Foundation to support math and science education.

gas free commuting?!? I thought this was hybrid and not 100% electric.

if the daily commute is less than 40-50 miles, it will run purely on electricity

it is a hybrid- in reverse- electric dominates and petrol assists but i really dont think its a real EV as it still uses petrol. But its a good go between. I just think a smaller petrol engine would be a sufficient generator and leave more space for batteries + can it run on petrol alone?

(besides the money going to education) That was a waste of money. This is not the future of transportation. This will become another EV1.

What a joke x2! "We have redefined automotive transportation with the Volt" - that's a very bold thing to say! What will the Volt do that the Prius hasn't done for years in a row now?? Ah... those crazy Americans!

too much money to spend on crap + too little mind equals 225k for a @#$!..., except maybe for the dude that actually did that, hoping the volt will evolve into a future true classic collectible... Honestly, rofl.

I actualy think its a good go between from pure petrol to pure electric propulsion though you would still have to be dumb to spend that much on it. Lets jus call it a donation in exchange for a car he he

I am a total gearhead and will never own an electric vehicle until I'm forced to. With that said, I think the volt is a pretty good vehicle. The range is within the vast majority of peoples daily commute so a trip to work and back will be solely on the battery pack. But, if the owner wants to take a weekend trip it does have the normal range of a gas powered vehicle. IMHO, the volt is a huge step forward over the Prius.... or Pompous as I like to call it.
