1-Series will feature a new FWD 5-door hatch with a new design to take on the likes of the VW Golf and the Audi A3

More details have emerged in an Autocar report on the upcoming front-wheel drive BMW 1-Series variants.

First off, it seems that BMW will be offering several variants based on the 1-Series starting in 2013, some of which will be FWD.

According to Autocar, the two new FWD 1-Series variants will be a 5-door hatchback and an accompanying wagon/estate version that will rival the VW Golf and Audi A3 models in the European market. That new FWD 1-Series will have a shorter bonnet and a larger cabin, moved forward, with more upright A-pillars and windscreen.

The FWD variants will be built on a modified version of the MINI Countryman platform and feature an aluminum-intensive chassis. The variants will arrive on the market in September 2013, according to Autocar sources at BMW.

Referred to as the UKL (acronym for Unter Klasse), the two FWD variants will be accompanied by 4 1-Series editions which will remain rear-wheel drive. Those will include a 3-door and 5-door hatch 1-Series and a coupe and cabriolet 1-Series.

Under that shortened bonnet of the FWD variants, there will not be enough room for 6-cylinder engines. Instead, the FWD 1-Series will be fitted with new 1.5 liter, 3-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. Codenamed the N37 and N38, respectively, the engines are modular derivatives of BMW's 3.0 liter power plants and share technology and components with them.

BMW will also provide 2.0 liter 4-cylinder petrol and diesel engines for the top of the range. As for performance variants to take on the Golf GTI, a turbocharged 2.0 liter petrol will be developed with around 220 bhp (223 PS / 164 kW) in output.

Now, we previously reported that BMW would rename the rear-wheel drive 1-Series the 2-Series, and that may still come to pass. The brand may discover that consumers are confused by such different variants which will look different in design.

BMW will be introducing the next-generation of the 1-Series at the Geneva auto show next March.

Yeah I agree, BMW should just stay with rear and all wheel drive and leave the front wheel drive for MINI.

not exactly the worst looking car, but not worthy to carry the BMW badge regarding the design... again not too much inspiration for such an important brand

If you think about it, BMW developed the new Mini. Its FWD, has minimal overhang and great handling.

I'd never buy a FWD BMW, but I don't think they'll have any problem finding takers. The majority of people who buy cars can't tell the difference from behind the wheel, & therefore don't care about stuff like that. The same type of comments came from purists who wailed, wept & cried foul when Porsche introduced the Cayenne... fast forward 8 years & the Cayenne is the best selling Porsche by a mile.

in australia, bmw at one point had ads promoting how their entire range of vehicles were RWD and the dynamics a RWD car brings. It's no wonder they pulled it off tv.

In a small car the fwd would be beneficial, especially when you want to get good mpg figures. Less weight and loss of power through the driveline. 1.5 TDI should be real cool, if they bring it to NA it should do quite well. I personally am looking forward for a golf TDI alternative.

What pills are BMW on atm???! that is the most shockingly ugly car ever!! No disrespect to KIA but thats the sort of car you'd expect from them and you'd buy it cause it would offer cheap hassle free motoring... but this will scare your children when they see it and cost a small fortune.

Let's face it, BMW as a prestige brand dies a long time ago. The 3-series outsells the Mondeo in the UK. BMWs are everywhere. They've even dropped the Ultimate Driving Machine tagline for some rubbish about joy. BMW is now a volume brand and hence FWD makes sense. Most people don't care what wheels are driven anyway. Heavy engines hung out ahead of the front axles hasn't stopped Audi drivers from looking down their noses at people in VWs, Skodas and Seats riding on the same platform...
