Sketches show the i40W (wagon body style) looking very Insignia-like

Here are four teaser sketches of the upcoming European-spec Hyundai i40W - the mid-sized replacement for the Sonata model in Europe.

The i40W was created at Hyundai's design studios in Germany, part of Hyundai and sister brand Kia's plan to develop models locally in Europe with more styling appeal for the fickle European markets.

The design certainly fits that mold, looking very much like an Opel Insignia Sports Tourer in the sketches here.

The i40W will come in two body styles - a four-door sedan and a wagon/estate. Although, only teasers for the wagon model were released as it will be debuting first.

Powering the i40W will be a series of diesel and petrol engines including the 1.6 liter GDI with 140 PS (103 kW) and a 2.0 liter with 177 PS (103 kW) topping out the range on the petrol side.

For the diesels, Hyundai will offer the 1.7 liter CRDI with either 115 PS (85 kW) or 136 PS (100 kW). Expected later will be the 2.0 liter CRDI featuring 177 PS (130 kW) mated to Hyundai's new dual-clutch gearbox.

The i40W (wagon) will make its debut at the Geneva auto show next March and will go on sale in Europe shortly afterwards. The 4-door sedan variant will go on sale in Europe next fall. The i40 will also make it to the United States market sometime in 2012.

i40: HYUNDAI'S NEW EUROPEAN FLAGSHIP

Hyundai has announced that its new D-segment car for Europe will be called i40. The i40, which was known by the codename ‘VF' during development, arrives as the company embarks on the next phase of its brand and product evolution in Europe.

Set to make its world premiere at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show in March, the new i40 aims to further shift European consumer perception of Hyundai to a more aspirational position, thanks to the vehicle's dynamic design and class-leading quality, performance and technical features.

The new i40 will be launched in estate form, with a saloon version following later in the year.

"We have bold ambitions for Hyundai in Europe, and the new i40 will provide the momentum we need to achieve our goals in 2011 and beyond. We expect the quality of the new i40 to continue the development of our image in Europe and attract new customers to the Hyundai brand," commented Allan Rushforth, Vice President of Hyundai Motor Europe.

Designed at Hyundai's European R&D facilities in Rüsselsheim, Germany, the new i40 is the company's first D-segment model to be specifically developed for the European market. The car will progress the ‘fluidic sculpture' design language, featuring the company's signature hexagonal front grille and rakish lines which give the i40 a dynamic, sporty appearance by connecting the front, side and rear profiles.

The new i40 will also become Hyundai's most innovative model on sale in Europe, including the latest environmental technologies developed under the company's Blue DriveTM eco-program, and a powertrain line-up which boasts best-in-class performance and fuel economy, and very low CO2 emissions.

"The i40 perfectly combines the four elements that have become core Hyundai values: practicality, performance, efficiency, and styling. Our designers and engineers have produced a car that encapsulates what European motorists look for in a D-segment vehicle."

The i40 will benefit from industry leading Five Year Triple Care package that includes a five-year unlimited millage warranty, five years' roadside assistance and five years of vehicle health checks.

More details on i40 will be available nearer the time of its motor show world premiere in Geneva in March 2011.

once again Hyundai NAILED IT! There is nothing wrong in being a Copy Cat if your copy is better than the original. And Hyundai's designs look better that what they are copying from, for all you haters out there.

I'm not an Asian auto industry fan. I also can't say I hate them. I'm ok with those Japanese, Korean, - you name it - , but I just don't care about'em. anyway, I must say that Hyundai is by far the most active car builder - at least concerning the efforts it takes to be able to innovate, to appear like "new" and so on. About 1 40w - yes, it looks alike Insignia, or Mazda, or whatever, but I must admit it looks pretty nice...

Bring this to the USA and I'd buy one right away. Looks great, better mileage than SUV, with lots of storage. I'm 45 year old single male and I'd get one.
