 Golf R confirmed for U.S.
2010 VW Golf R

German automaker will fulfill the desires of VW enthusiasts in the U.S. and bring the Golf R model to that market in 2012

Volkswagen has confirmed that the Golf R model will be making it to North American shores by 2012.

"The European Golf R is simply the most powerful Volkswagen sports performance vehicle ever built," read a VW statement released Thursday confirming the move.

The German automaker has an ambitious plan to expand its sales worldwide, and particularly in the United States. The goal is to become the world's largest automaker by sales volume by 2018 with over 10 million units sold annually. The sales target for the U.S. is 800,000 VW-badged vehicles a year by 2018, about 3 times the current volume.

In order to achieve its goals, VW is going to have to increase its emotional quotient with American consumers and gain more appeal. Part of that requires fulfilling the desires of VW enthusiasts who have clamored for years to bring Europe-only models such as the Golf R and Scirocco R to North America.

"In the U.S., Volkswagen has earned considerable emotional equity over the years. Volkswagen enthusiasts are passionate about our cars," said Jonathan Browning, CEO of Volkswagen Group of America, on Thursday in a speech in New York to the International Motor Press Association.

"We have products that appeal to the enthusiast and cars that are accessible to the majority," said Browning. "I'm pleased to say, there is more of this strategy to come."

All of a sudden VeeDub and Audi products are all the rage Stateside! Coincidence? No. Just consistency and reinvention made it all happen. My mkIV GTi is built like a bank vault and never skips a beat throughout harsh London winter and summer seasons. Deal closed! The R is a different animal altogether, but I still remember the all-time great mkIII VR6 powerplant; simply epic!

VWvortex says it'll cost $33-34k. Are you kidding me? With 260hp? The WRX is far cheaper, the STi is far faster, the EVO is more accomplished, and the 135i is RWD. They're completely insane. This should be the drivetrain in the GTI, with AWD as a GTI option. If it had 300+HP, maybe I could see it, but 260hp and Haldex AWD for $33k is lame as hell. It'll sell only to fanboys.

If it is like what they did with the MKV, it only comes out to a couple of $K more over a comparably loaded GTI. It's not unusual to pay $1,500 for AWD. The rest is cachet and special bits and baubles.

But the problem is, for me, that there are so many cars out there that perform better for cheaper while being damn near as luxurious. The GTI is overpriced too, in my book, and it trails its competition in power and features. AWD is nice, but a WRX is cheaper and offers a better AWD system and just as much power.

Maybe so, but I find the interior of the WRX to be lacking. Since that's where you spend 99% of your time, it's a deal killer for me. The mazdaspeed3 interior is good, exterior... well I could get over it, but it's front wheel drive. The Golf R is decent looking in and out, and has AWD, so I think I'd go for it over the other options even though it costs a fair bit more.

Unfortunately, given that we only get 91 pump octane gas in most of the USA, VW will be lucky to get 240 bhp out of that engine from the US-market Golf R.
