2012 Chevrolet Sonic

Will be called the Sonic

Chevrolet has announced plans to drop the Aveo name in North America.

While the move isn't much of a surprise, considering its less than stellar reputation, the Aveo name will continue to be used in over 50 countries. However, in North America (Canada, Mexico and the United States) the car will be known as the Sonic.

According to Chris Perry, vice president of Chevrolet U.S. Marketing, "The Sonic represents a new beginning for Chevrolet in the small car segment and so we felt it was time to give it a new name. The new car is roomy, stylish and fun to drive, and Sonic is a youthful, energetic name that helps convey what this vehicle is about."

The 2012 Sonic will go into production next year at GM's Lake Orion assembly plant in Michigan.

All-New Name for All-New U.S. Built Small Car: Chevrolet Sonic

DETROIT - Chevrolet announced today that its all-new, U.S. built small car will be called the Chevrolet Sonic in North America.

"The Sonic represents a new beginning for Chevrolet in the small car segment and so we felt it was time to give it a new name," said Chris Perry, vice president, Chevrolet U.S. Marketing. "The new car is roomy, stylish and fun to drive, and Sonic is a youthful, energetic name that helps convey what this vehicle is about."

The small car will carry the Sonic name in Canada, Mexico and the United States. Production of the Sonic begins in 2011 at GM's Orion Assembly Center in Michigan, which received a $545-million investment in upgrades and retooling, and will help restore approximately 1,000 jobs in the metropolitan Detroit area.

The vehicle will continue to be called Aveo in other parts of the world, where it will be sold in more than 50 countries.

For me, that was actually the first thing that came to mind. A blue Sonic with Evo-style fins and red rims. lmao

And in Australia, they call it the Holden Barina Spark, because that's such a brilliant name.

Once again GM playing the name game. "let's rename this POS and it will gain consumer confidence". It didn't work when they renamed the Caviler, S-10, Caprice, Jimmy and etc. I want GM to succeed, but' it won't happen when they are still playing their same old games (rename and re-badge).

Hmm love the sharp new look, but Sonic? I pray they stick to Barina for us. And btw James2911, the Barina Spark is a different model altogether which is based on the Chevrolet Spark.
