Hyundai considering launching a luxury brand

Would compete with Mercedes, BMW and Lexus

According to a recent report, Hyundai is considering a premium luxury brand to tackle BMW, Lexus, and Mercedes.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Hyundai USA President John Krafcik revealed the company is mulling over several options for the proposed brand. Under the first scenario, the brand - possibly called Genesis - would be a separate entity with exclusive dealerships that would only sell premium models. The second, more likely, scenario is Hyundai dealers would create a "showroom within a showroom" with dedicated space set aside for the new brand.

To ensure the marquee would be successful, it would likely gain several new models to be sold alongside the Genesis and Equus. Nothing is official, but the two leading candidates are a BMW 3-Series competitor and a Lexus RX-like crossover.

A final decision isn't due for awhile, but in the meantime, Hyundai will be watching to see how well the Equus is received.

They should definitely launch a separate brand to distinguish their lesser and more expensive models. Not using Hyundai badges on the Genesis and Equus lines is a good start but there's so much more potential in this brand with the cars they're already making. Probably won't overtake MB or BMW anytime soon but I think Hyundai can without a doubt give most Lexxi a run for their money in a couple years time.

Blind, stupid or not, Hyundai has been taking notes at everyone's playbook and is working. To me, it looks like a Lexus LS with MB front grills.

I will never buy a Hyundai. They should just do what they are good at, making cheap cars.

I always thought they had planned on launching the Genesis cars under the Genesis brand. I was surprised to not see this when the Genesis Coupe and Sedan came to market in the USA. Feels like a big missed opportunity.

about 20 years ago, Toyota launched Lexus brand and everyone laughed about it. everyone thought how can cheap Japanese car company compete against european luxury cars. now Lexus is just as good as M-B or BMW, and in terms of product quality and reliability, nothing comes close to Lexus. so this new Hyundai luxury brand, people may laugh at it now, but may be ten or twenty years later, (judging by the car Hyundai makes these days) i'm quite sure they will be just as good as Lexus or M-B.

Well they better start stating their design principles. I like the way they are right now though, quality wise.

The new luxury car force to be reckoned with after Lexus,Infiniti and Acura - is Hyundai (or Genesis for the matter).

A luxury brand is not just cars with leather seats and wood, A luxury brand is made of tradition, high tecnology and reputation. Hyundai doesnt have it.

Ignorance is like a moving car without brakes; sums up some comments on this web page!! First it was the Japanese, now it's the Koreans and next the Chinese will follow. Hyundai's 5year warranty may have been trounced by Kia's 7, but Hyundai got there first and it's finally paying dividends! The Equus, a Merc/Lexus clone it may be, but like any global market follower needs a benchmarker and these two are preferred donors as they are both considered global market leaders. Lexus, just 22 years ago became Toyota's luxury arm and was met by global ridicule as its flagship model, the LS, was unashamedly an S-class clone whilst the GS300 was even worse! Who's having the last laugh now?! Go for it Genesis!
