BMW 1 Series M Coupe teased again at Autosport Awards [video]

Launches next spring

With the North American International Auto Show just around the corner, BMW is ramping up their teaser campaign for the highly-anticipated 1-Series M Coupe.

In their latest bit of self promotion, Dr. Kay Segler and WTCC driver Andy Priaulx have given another peak at the coupe's bumpers at the Autosport Awards in London.  As excited as you undoubtedly are, pause for a moment to notice the modified front fenders and four-tailpipe exhaust system in full view.

While BMW is still keeping a lot of details under wraps, the company has previously stated the 1-Series M will weigh approximately 1500 kg (3,307 lbs) and feature a chassis, braking system and rear differential similar to the M3.

Furthermore, the car will be powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbo six-cylinder engine with 340 hp (254 kW / 345 PS) - possibly 445 hp (332 kW / 451 PS) for U.S. models. It will be mated exclusively to a six-speed manual transmission, which should allow the 1-Series M to accelerate from 0-60 mph in less than five seconds.

My goodness, you would think that BMW is introducing a ground breaking, clean sheet of paper, design, not a factory tuned 1-Series.

Every time that BMW introduces a new M model that's not a SUV, it is groundbreaking, in a sense that it completely blows the driver away in how good it is. The M6, M5, M3, and older models were all like that, every time a new iteration came out. NOTE: I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT THE X5M OR X6M, AS THOSE ARE NOT REAL M CARS.

If M division put its hands on it, its an M car. Drive all the suv's that are out there by different manufacturers, then drive the X5 M. Its the king of all SUV's.

Keep in mind that the 1-series platform is the playground and the ///M version is the spritual successor to the light and fancy free of die neue classe. The 3, 5 and 7 models are type cast, and redesigning them year by year is an exercise in calculated model bloat and market research... so let them stretch their legs and wine and dine us on the reveal, we all know what it will look like anyways. The hype machine is good marketing and they want everyone to want a piece of entry-level motorsport action! Who knows, this small light rocket could be a taste of things to come.

I'm sick of all the hype. Put up or shut up, BMW. You're just lucky nobody else is making any waves in this segment.

The silliness to all of the hype and teasing about how the car looks is that 99% of what is special about an "M" edition is under-the-skin. Actually, since Bangle arrived in Bavaria that could be said about all BMW models.

Just imagine this comparison: Audi TTRS 340 hp, BMW 1 series M Coupe 345 hp, Nissan 370 Z 332 hp, Porsche Cayman R 330 hp... Oh my...

BMW 1 series M Coupe is 340hp. It's all about weight and weight distribution. TTRS with 4wd and s-tronic is a very different car. Beating the Porsche would be good. BUT early reports suggest the engine, having a low redline, means you need to work the gears to keep it on power. Not a problem with the current M3.

Sorry, the silliness and hype CAN backfire if you keep dragging it on. Eventually the big revealing will just confirm to anyone who cares that the finished article looks more or less like all the speculative renderings seen online today. So yes, we're 'commentating' but now it's moved from 'woah that's awesome, well done BMW' to 'get on with it already you dicks...if I see one more PR moron lifting up the corner of a car cover with a stupid grin on his face I'm going to set him on fire..'!
