Nissan's premium brand may want to adopt AMG engines for Infiniti's IPL performance line

Infiniti models powered by AMG engines?

According to a report by British magazine Autocar, that could be a result of Daimler's recent partnership agreement with Nissan.

The Japanese automaker is considering adopting some AMG technology, including going as far as shared platforms between Infiniti and Mercedes-Benz/AMG models, in order to up its credibility as a premium performance brand.

Such Infiniti models could come to carry badges that say "Powered by AMG".

Some may think that's a great idea but the risk is that the Infiniti brand further undercuts itself vis-a-vis the more established German competition by not coming up with its own technology.

According to Autocar sources, one of the engines under consideration is the new 3.5 liter turbocharged V6 being developed by Mercedes-Benz tuned to around the 400 bhp (406 PS / 298 kW) mark. It would replace the 3.7 liter in the Infiniti G series.

Another would be the 6.3 liter V8 from AMG to power the IPL (Infiniti Performance Line) variant of the M series sedan - a rival to the BMW M5. The price of such an M IPL would be around £60,000 (€70,524/$94,624) in the U.K., making the model competitive with the likes of the Jaguar XFR but still below the E63 AMG which features the same engine.

did someone bang your head? what 10 fold respect? I have a G35 2008 which has kicked the ass of C350 & E500 V8 over and oevr .....Infiniti doesn't need to outsource gas guzzling crappy AMG expertise at all... why Infiniti is lacking confidence? lexus didn't jump here and there for the ISF & LFA!!! there is cumulative GTR and 350Z experience already in house! G37 is the fastest 4 door naturally aspirated V6 in the world, do someone consider that? how hard is it for a company like Nissan to milk another 100 horses out of the VQ? don't despise an infiniti till you drive one and smoke ALL naturally aspirated V8's of Mercedes!!

Agreed. AMG build amazing engines with incredible booming sound. Their new 5.5 litre is a beast.

Infiniti's have a very recognizable and great exhaust note too...the problem i see with this move is that your maintenance costs are bound to go up because no engine consumes oil like an AMG.

AMG builds some of the wonderful engines around but Infiniti could not deny that their Twin turbo V6 from the GTR is a gem too. Why don't they put GTR engine in Infinitis instead?

As it is, the G37 and GT-R are very similar underneath. If you add the engine to the mix, then the GT-R would be undercut by the G37.

For me, this will be one of the best automotive news in years: an Infiniti with AMG engine. Excellent german engine with Japanese reliabilty. It doesn't get better than this. Currently I'm in a market for a new car. I'm stuck between a C63, a E350, or a M45. The issues are crash testing result, handling, and reliability. As above, an Infiniti with an AMG engine will solve all my headache now on having to choose.

How about an E 63 AMG?

It really depends on your current circumstances but the E350 with AMG bodykit is all the car you will ever need - it's built like a tank (5 star Euro NCAP rating), it's looks are growing on people, it has huge boot space and it's very comfortable and reliable. Perfect all rounder. The C63 AMG has been around for a while and is more a hot rod with a firm set up...if you drive long distances then it would not be as suitable.

I agree with BMW. If you want reliability, the best option is a German not so special car with no fancy stuff. I would also suggest an E350, as it is plenty fast, looks good, probably safe too. While there are other makes that offer more invigorating drives, higher end MBs do drive very well and last long. If I were you, I wouldn't rule out a 535xi, either. If I were in the market, I would sign on that one instantly. But the C63 is very tempting...

Exactly my thoughts. Why would Mercedes want to strengthen a competitor?

Now all Infiniti have to do is make beautiful cars and leave behind the current design language common throughout their range.

I heard GM had been trying to work with BMW to try and buy engines from them as they are behind on DOHC etc.

If Infiniti wants to establish itself as a premium brand, it needs to build engines that will be comparable to AMG, not buy from them. The biggest problem with Infiniti and why people continue to discredit its cars is because they haven't accomplished nearly as much as the well-established brands like BMW, Benz, and Audi have. However, it seems that its goal is just to get its name out even further and sell more cars. I'm assuming that it would reinvest the profits into building its own high-performance line of engines and cut its dependency on AMG. That's what it should do, anyway.

Maybe they should let the people who is responsible for the GTR to build a serious sports saloon to rival the germans not lexus, cadillacs or hyundais.

I'm sorry...call me an elitist trash for all I care...but the AMG brand has been diluted enough as is with all the different class of Mercedes models being produced... To have Infiniti's (I hate the quality of their interiors...nice engines...but not much else...)running around with AMG engines...that's not good...
