Shelby GT500 bursts into flames [video]
'Blue Diamond' Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 was tuned to 800 bhp (597 kW)
Hey, be careful where you leave those oil-soaked rags around the garage.
Here's a video of an 800 bhp (597 kW) 2008 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 bursting into flames. This particular model is called the Blue Diamond by its owner but in this brief video it doesn't seem very good at keeping its cool.
According the the owner, a stretched piston rod bolt simply shot out from the car.
The Shelby GT500 comes standard with 5.4 liter V8 with 500 horsepower but this high-strung car's performance was boosted to 800 bhp by a tuner in Florida for drag racing.
Time to start over.

Maybe it happens all the time, so they are accustomed. No pressure at all :D

But, what are those guys doing exactly? Shaving the tires maybe? Notice the weighty man sitting in the trunk, apparently to increase rear grip.

The big guy is helping traction for sure. I have witnessed in person many muscle car dyno sessions and yes they lose traction. I witnessed a GNX absolutely smoke the rear tires on a dyno and still put down over 1200hp. Fortunately (or unfortunately in the health care budget point of view) there are plenty of hefty fellows around here in Redneckistan that are willing to sit on a car. Sitting is what hefty guys love to do. Thats why they are hefty.

Dyno treads do not provide as much friction as asphalt so the ere is very often wheelspin. Seems purdy obvious, dont it?

ya, notice all the cut-off t-shirts. Doesn't look like the brightest tuning crew...then again, it is a Ford, they're built to break ;)

nobody seems worried nor scared when it bursts into flames, and nobody looks like a mechanic or something, just a bunch of fat guys saying (not yelling) "fire"... you can tell they don't even know how to run a dyno test when the guy in the car applies the brakes

That noise you heard was the dyno brake bringing the drum to a stop. If the operator had pressed the brakes in the car there would have been way more drama, the car would have began to move way too much possibly hopping off the rollers.

That's one way to exploit the shortcomings of using a 5.4 truck engine block. With a 105 mm stroke it's very hard not to selfdestroy, overrevved and overboosted. As for Ford reliabilty... take a picture, it'll last longer.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't the quadrillion dollar Koenigsegg use a Ford engine? Think about it.

Watch how long the shift light is on and he appears to ignore it and continue WOT.
