Its actually based on the Viper. DaimlerChrysler developed that platform for a Viper successor, but as everything in the union it was a Daimler lead project, therefor its more of a Mercedes platform then a Dodge one, so when Chrysler was sold Daimler decided not to throw away a great platform... though I personally think it would have suited the Viper more.

the SLS is not based on the Viper , they just used some body parts on the SLS prototypes. the SLS is actually a budget SLR, with aluminium instead of carbon fiber.the chassis was built from the ground up by AMG (it's the first time AMG designed a whole car) so it can be used as a petrol car or as an electric car.
the gullwing doors alone require a chassis that it purposely built for them.
anyway, Americans like to think the SLS is a Viper because we all know Mercedes is evil.

@scratchy996 wrong.the prototype car was begun to life as a new generation Viper , but as Solstice21 said it was taken by Mercedes.SLR and SLS chassis are completly different things because you are almost free to shape carbonfiber but not with steel/aluminum and notice SLR with carbon fiber parts still weighs more than SLS so there must some different things.Mercedes changed some parts in that prototype and made SLS,like gullwing doors,engine,transmission...

Looks a bit different than original first one from 2004, rather looks like tuned version of original. Little bit overdesigned but some elements looks nice.

I have an older SLR, I wish it was turbocharged as the whine of the supercharger over the engines song spoils the experience. Also many of the interior components look cheap and break easily. I can see why it has not sold well.

The supercharger whine spoils the noise!?!?!?! Saying that is like saying Rober Plant's voice taints Led Zeppelins sound. I'm with loyo, yea right kid.

one of the best ever!!!! at Mercedes-AMG-McLaren was always crazy with top of the range Benz, every mighty Merc has it's own designation:
SLR McLaren - Batman's ride, SLS AMG Gullwing - Devil's (Satan's ride) and SL66 AMG Black Series - Darth Vader's ride :)))

LATEST NEWS: Porsche CGT offers ?10000 for the safe return of its front bumper!

Seriously, this looks like a cheap tuning kit - absolutely tasteless and really not like the usual elegant Mercedes-Benz style. I'm really surprised that they are offering this...

it's nice. perhaps a few more SLR owners are pissed by this even more? or they simply don't care anymore.

Classic icon, will be worth big $$ in the future much like the 300 SL classics.

I find this hard to believe.
MB have SLS, and Mclaren the MP4-12C, so why would the go ahead be given by MB or Mclaren for any more SLR's?
I think an update of 'old' or rebuilding of damaged SLR's being more likely for this run of 25.

@ Hero Sina , wrong , that was just a rumour from an unnamed source. i don't believe Chrysler intended the next viper to have an electric version and gullwing doors. besides , the AMG team started working at the SLS right after the SLR was completed.

The SLS development mules had some Viper body panels, so all these idiots think it was a joint project.
McLaren must have too many leftover parts. There are so many special edition SLRs, not a single one of them is actually special. Just let it die

The front of this car looks awful....it really looks like MB are taking the p***. Same engine and a restyled front bumber is pretty much the only difference. It's probably MB doing a survey of how many stupid idiots are out there with money ready to part with on an car that has finished production.
