Dodge boss confirms Viper resurrection in 2013
Last 2010 Dodge Viper coupe delivered on the production line 01.07.2010

No involvement from Ferrari or Alfa Romeo

It was only a few months ago that we reported on the last Dodge Viper rolling off the assembly line. Now, Chrysler plans to revive the model for 2013, according to a report by the Detroit News.

The confirmation comes directly from Chrysler itself, with Ralph Gilles, head of Dodge, telling the Detroit News that the Chrysler board has given the project the greenlight and that development is on schedule.

Gilles said that the new Viper won't be based on any Ferrari or Alfa Romeo model, in particular the Alfa Rome 8C Competizione, as some have speculated given Chrysler's alliance with the Fiat Group. As Gilles also serves as head of design, he provided some hints as to the Viper's new look.

"Where the cabin is, relative to the wheels, is unique. The Viper cabin is very rearward and the hood is very long. Few cars in the industry are designed with those proportions anymore."

The new Viper won't be getting a Ferrari engine either but may sport a new or updated power plant from the last 8.4 liter V10 that came with over 600 horsepower.

But Gilles welcomes Fiat's input for the next Viper.

"Fiat has an awesome ability to tune cars. I want the new Viper to be a more forgiving car to drive and accessible to more people. We've never had stability control on a high-performance car, which is about to happen on the new car."

Hopefully the engine on the viper won't be as massive as the current one. I think it's too much.

"I want the new Viper to be a more forgiving car to drive and accessible to more people. We've never had stability control on a high-performance car, which is about to happen on the new car." And for that reason the new Viper will never be as awe inspiring as the old one. Taming the beast was what made you a hero in that car, think of that blue guy in that movie Avatar who tamed the Toruk and became king of the blue people.

I hope the viper keeps its torque selecting gas pedal rather then reverting to a throttle position pedal.

i think the new model is going to be the same as the the current one since they're basing it on the 8c. i would much rather to just do more fabrication and style work on the current one...

Malik, may I suggest you read the story again? ''Gilles said that the new Viper won't be based on any Ferrari or Alfa Romeo model, in particular the Alfa Rome 8C Competizione, as some have speculated given Chrysler's alliance with the Fiat Group.''

I called it 2 years ago. Glad to see that I was right, but more importantly I'm glad to see the snake is back. A true all-American, I will re-welcome it with open arms.

As a Viper fanatic and a GenI owner, I find this quote ruins the whole Viper lifestyle. "I want the new Viper to be a more forgiving car to drive and accessible to more people. We've never had stability control on a high-performance car, which is about to happen on the new car." This is not the reason the Viper was designed back in 1989. I know everything nowadays is about turning profit and mass consumption, but for gods sakes, can anything remain original in this day and age? The Viper was meant to be an enthusiast car. A brute. A car nuts dream. It was not meant to be driven to work by an average Joe who when asked, what is under the hood, replies with, "It's like a V14 or something." I say this because I have ran into it.

The Viper is somewhat unforgiving but despite its lack of electrical nannies, its a very good handling car by many accounts. So while the TC will probably make it more accessible, and i understand Gilles reasong for it, i cant say i agree, as BM Gear and Jasanimation said, the Vipers uniqueness aside from it being a true American sports car was its pure driving characteristic, just the driver and the car, with only the drivers right foot being the traction control.
