2012 Audi A6 official details released - in depth [videos]

On sale early next

Following yesterday's leak, Audi has officially unveiled the 2011 A6.

While the design won't win any awards for originally or boldness, the car features elegant styling that wouldn't raise any eyebrows at the country club. It is slightly shorter than before, but the wheelbase has been stretched to measure 2910mm long. Key highlights include 16-inch alloy wheels, LED taillights, an integrated trunk-lid spoiler, a dual exhaust system, and optional LED headlights. If you want something sportier, the S-Line package adds modified bumpers, a sport suspension, a faux rear diffuser, and 19-inch alloy wheels.

Inside, the cabin echoes the A7 and comes nicely equipped with automatic climate control, MMI, a 6.5-inch monitor, and "micrometallic platinum" trim (aluminum and wood are optional). If that isn't impressive enough, you can order a 1,300-watt Bang & Olufsen sound system, internet connectivity (via a UMTS module), MMI navigation plus (with an 8-inch monitor and MMI touch), and individual rear seats.

Safety goodies include adaptive cruise control, active lane assist (which uses a camera to detect road lines and help steer the car), parking assist (provides assistance when parallel parking), side assist (detects vehicles in blind spots), and night vision assist with pedestrian detection.

At launch, five different engines will be available. The most efficient is the 2.0 TDI which has an average fuel consumption of 4.9 L/100 km (48.00 US mpg) and C02 emissions of 129 g/km. It produces 130 kW (177 PS) and 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) of torque, which allows the car to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 8.7 seconds and top out at 228 km/h (142 mph).

On the other hand, the new 3.0 TDI V6 produces 150 kW (204 PS) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft). This enables the car to dash from 0-100 km/h in 7.2 seconds, before topping out at 240 km/h (149 mph). Its fuel average consumption is 5.2 L/100 km and CO2 emissions are 137 g/km.

For more power, a second version of the 3.0 TDI churns out 180 kW (245 PS) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque. With this particular mill, the sprint from 0-100 takes 6.1 seconds and the top speed is limited to 250 km/h (155 mph). Average fuel consumption registers 6.0 L/100km and CO2 emissions are 158 g/km.

The naturally-aspirated 2.8 FSI V6 produces 150 kW (204 PS) and 80 Nm (207 lb-ft) of torque. Paired to a multitronic transmission, the engine allows the A6 to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 7.7 seconds and hit a top speed of 240 km/h (149 mph). It consumptions 7.4 L/100 km (31.79 US mpg) and emits 172 grams of CO2 per km.

Lastly, the 3.0 TFSI V6 cranks out 220 kW (300 PS) and 440 Nm (325 lb-ft) of torque. This enables the car to run from 0-100 km/h in 5.5 seconds and hit an electronically limited 250 km/h (155 mph). In terms of efficiency, expect 8.2 L/100 km (26.68 US mpg) and CO2 emissions of 190 g/km.

Transmission choices run the gambit of virtually everything Audi has to offer: there's the traditional six-speed manual, the efficient multitronic CVT, and the seven-speed S tronic.

Dynamically, the A6 rides on a new aluminum-intensive chassis which is supported by steel springs (an adaptive air suspension is optional on some models). Front-wheel drive is standard (on lower-end models), but quattro all-wheel drive is available. The latter features a 40:60 rear bias and an integrated torque-vectoring function which can be further enhanced with the optional sport differential.

To reduce weight, the body features advanced steel and aluminum construction. While we won't bore you with the specifics, the front fenders, hood, and doors are made out of aluminum. This allows the A6 2.0 TDI to tip the scales at a respectable 1,575 kilograms (3,472.28 lbs).

On sale early next year, the 2011 A6 will be priced from €38,500 in Germany.

The new Audi A6 Sedan: setting the standard in innovation

Audi has redesigned its flagship executive class model. The new A6 is set to make its market debut in early 2011. With its light body, sporty chassis and a wide array of new assistance and multimedia systems, the full-sized sedan is packed with innovative solutions in every area of technology. The range of available engines and drivetrains is equally extensive. Combining the power of a V6 with the fuel efficiency of a four-cylinder engine, the soon-to-be-available A6 hybrid will be one highlight of the lineup.

Much of the body of the new Audi A6 consists of aluminum and high-tech steels, rendering it exceedingly light, stiff and safe. State-of-the art design methods and materials ensure extremely low interior noise levels. Precision tuning of all components and systematic hydraulic damping in the axle and drivetrain bearings provide excellent vibrational comfort.

The design of the new Audi A6 embodies athleticism and elegance. The sedan is 4.92 meters (16.14 ft) long and 1.87 meters (6.14 ft) wide, but just 1.46 meters (4.79 ft) high - sporty proportions that are unrivaled by the competition. The long engine hood, the low, sweeping roofline and the prominent lines on the flanks create a dynamic overall appearance. Optional LED headlights emphasize the striking expression at the front.

The roomy interior of the new Audi A6 echoes the sinewy style of the exterior. The salient element is the "wrap-around" - an inlay encircling the driver and the front-seat passenger. The elegantly curved dash panel places the driver at the center of the interior.

Every detail of the interior is a testament to the care that Audi invests in carmaking. All materials, including an innovative layered-wood veneer, have been selected and crafted with the utmost care. As an option, the front seats can be equipped with ventilation and massage functions. Classy ambient lighting in the lighting package provides small points of light throughout the interior.

The new Audi A6 features the logical ergonomics concept that distinguishes all of the brand's models. A highly efficient automatic air conditioning system and the latest-generation MMI radio operating system are standard; Audi also offers an optional head-up display, which projects important information onto the windshield. The MMI touch operating system is also available as an option. This enables much of the hard-drive MMI navigation plus system to be controlled by means of a touchpad.

The online services, developed though a partnership between Audi and service provider Google, connect the full-sized sedan to the Internet via the Bluetooth car phone online. A UMTS module pulls images and information from Google Earth up on the monitor and integrates them with the navigation route. A WLAN hotspot provides contact to mobile terminals on board. The top of the hi-fi line is the Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System.

MMI navigation plus works closely together with the optional assistance and safety systems in the new A6. It forwards the route data to the control units for the headlights, the automatic transmission and the adaptive cruise control with stop & go function. This enables these systems to recognize complex scenarios and assist the driver. In many situations, the Audi pre sense safety system is able to reduce accidents and their consequences, or even prevent them altogether. The Audi active lane assist helps the driver keep the A6 on course, and the park assist system relieves the driver of the chore of steering when parallel parking.

Audi offers the A6 with a choice of five powerful, highly efficient engines: two gasoline engines and three TDI units. These powerplants develop between 130 kW (177 hp) and 220 kW (300 hp). All of these engines make use of important technologies from the brand's modular efficiency platform - the start-stop system, the energy recovery system, and the innovative thermal management concept.

Throughout the entire model line, fuel consumption in the A6 has decreased by up to 19 percent compared to the previous model. In terms of consumption figures, the A6 outperforms the competition.

The most powerful unit in the range is the 2.0 TDI. In conjunction with a manual transmission, it requires on average just 4.9 liters of fuel per 100 km (48.00 US mpg) and emits just 129 g CO2 per km (207.61 g/mile). The A6 hybrid will be available from Audi at a later date. Serving up 180 kW (245 hp) of system performance, its 2.0 TFSI plus electric motor will achieve efficient and sporty acceleration with an average fuel consumption of only 6.2 liters per 100 km (37.94 US mpg) (provisional figure).

As was the case with the previous model, the new Audi A6 is also available with a wide range of drivetrains. The choice, based on the engine version, will include a manual six-speed transmission, the continuously variable multitronic, and the brand-new, sporty S tronic. Each unit is precisely tuned and features a wide gear-ratio spread, thereby making a significant contribution to the sedan's efficiency.

Depending on the engine version, power is funneled via the gears to the front wheels or to the quattro permanent all-wheel drive, whose crown-gear center differential and torque-vectoring function achieve the ultimate traction, stability and dynamic response. For the top-of-the-line engines, Audi will offer an optional sport differential.

The chassis of the new A6 combines sporty precision with supreme comfort. Its links are made of aluminum; the redesigned power steering features a highly efficient electromechanical drive. The executive sedan has wheels ranging from 16 to 20 inches in diameter.

The Audi drive select dynamic handling system is standard, and the front-wheel-drive models have the sporty ESP with electronic limited-slip differential on board. For enhanced comfort, adaptive air suspension with controlled damping is available as an option. Dynamic steering will be available soon, also as an option.

It's gonna be a great car in driving, comfort, efficiency e.t.c., but it looks sadly

Yeah, I think so too. In terms of design, Audi has edged its main rivals (BMW an Merc) lately but this.. I don't know. Something is not right about it.. Maybe it'll look better in real-life.

I would call it a less ugly A8. In pictures atleast, and on video, the new A8 just doesn't work for me. Liked the previous A8 better. When it comes to looks of the A6 i kind of like it. Going to give it the benefit of the doubt since wasn't really a fan of the new bmw 5-series before I saw it in person. Undoubtfully going to be a great sucsess. Loving the wood interior.

Headlights looks like 5GT but these have angles, and taillights looks almost like the previous Sonata! The front is not bad but the overall design is disappointing

you are spot on about the headlights being 5gt, ill add that the dash has a touch of bmw z4 and 1 series, .....of course it will be better quality!

The front looks more like a Mitsubishi Lancer, don't you think?

it's okay. nothing too fancy. except that B&O system. IMO, B&O should just stay within the upper markets.

Great interior and well...it looks like an Audi! It's a pity that Audi is mounting those 5-spoke-rotor wheels on every model. Overall a good car.

Wow, such a departure from the norm. Audi, you're spoiling us now. This new design language is quite remarkable. Seriously, I'll stop rolling my eyes when Audi give us an RS6 with 700bhp and some bloody steering feel.

It doesn't appear to look all-new since it has the same body roofline, door shutlines as the model it replaces, the C6-generation A6. The interior looks amazing while the front looks like the current Mitsubishi Lancer 2.0GT or Evolution while the rear is the most dissapointing of all. I believe this car is based on the outgoing car, expect an evolution like what the 996 to 997 or Golf 5 to Golf 6 or the new Passat. For my opinion that the 1996-2003 C4-generation A6 is the most beautiful Audi saloon ever. With the smooth rear end and avantgarde stylish bauhaus original fresh timeless yet distinctively Audi in the era of the original TT-coupe. The new however is just horrible! I therefore take the A7 sportback.

There is just way too many shutlines around the car and judging on the bonnet shutlines, this car is built at a cost and appears to look very cheap compared to the previous majestic A6. The E-Class on the other handlooks properly built.

That you says the 2003 A6 is the most beautiful of them all says all about your taste of style. You don't like change at all.. THe C4 is the ugliest A6 saloon ever made! The first pretty A6 saloon was the one this is replacing. I think the front on this is better then the last one, but the back should have been more like the c6.

you didn't read my message carefully, i said the A6 that was built 1996-2003, the C4 - the one with the orignal TT's ass is sexy. Compare that to its rivals at that time, it was futuristic and way ahead of its time.

Looking at this car in profile, I cover the rear of the car with my hand and i see the A7 sportback. I cover the front of the car and i see strong resemblence to the A4. IMO one can easily mistake the rear as an A4 facelift model. The interior is once again gorgeous. Audi always nails their interiors but the exterior is nothing spectacular at all. Audi just lacks imagination after the R8.

At least the front end is a bit more original. IMO the rear is plain ugly, the side is bland but I'll definitely give them points for reducing the front overhang. The dash seems to be state of the art..and should we expect a 4.2 version as well? I'll reserve any further judgment until I see one in person. Hopefully this will be a KO like it's predecessor.

average consumer wouldn't even notice that it is a new car. Someone was walking pass my computer screen while this page was up, and he thought it was an A4.

"average consumer wouldn't even notice that it is a new car" and you think that statement doesn't apply to 95% of the cars out there? if you think this looks like the c6 then you're either extremely near sighted or plain ignorant. but from your name perhaps..bmw fanboy much?

So basically all Audi's are the same car with the same exterior and interior, but you know why this is happening with Audi? Because Audi differentiates it's cars from the LED lights of each Audi car, they put all their efforts not in the design of the car, but the LED lights. Just have to say it one more time, this is just pure ugly! Thanks Audi for having us wait another 6 years for a brand new car!

i think it?s like a mix of the A4's sportiness and the A8's elegance, it's exactly what an Audi A6 should look like. but that?s just my 2 cents.

Corporate image? Everybody is doing it Take a look on the new Elantra's nose EXACTLY the same as on the Tucson. Those M-Bs too. This A6: Evolutionary. Discrete. Best Audi combination of lines, LEDs and headlight shapes. I like it.

After viewing the video and pics, I noted Audi's designers liked to employ the "minimalist" effect on its new models, especially the new A6. The exterior was designed seemingly to last for years - crisp edges, smooth-firm-looking lines and contours. The headlights looks unique; the attention to detail (the placement of the LEDs) were impressive - so does the interior. The interior looks understated yet comfy. It is a good place to snuggle in and catch a nap. There were two things I don't like about this car - (1) the rearlights look uninspired; it should be dynamically-tweaked (can't find a simpler meaning) similar to the front, (2) The price was too upscale for my finances. Overall, it is one good looking mid-size lux-sedan.

since when minimalist mean boring?

boring's all relative and a matter of opinion. conservative designs sell. there's a reason the 5 Series and E Class don't look like Nissan GT-Rs.

Paulds, I think you have misread my comment. My guess was that you read my first "dislike" point - about "the rearlights look uninspired" part and probably assumed that the "minimalist mean boring" - which was not true. I praised the new A6 for its good looks; not a "bread and butter" criticism of the car, which I did not indicate. I do not see minimalist design as a dull concept.

Audi can heave a sigh of relief. New A6 can only enhance the recently launched A8. Audi now have a range of cars which are homogenous in looks, but also establish their 'individuality' amongst rivals. New A6 is a worthy successor to the outgoing model. Big alloys 'flatter' the car! Well done!! isaacu

Can some1 bring back de Silva frm VW! New A6 looks fine as a facelift of the last model bt as an all new A6 i'm nt so sure how well it will age. Same with E class coz they both look lyk alterations of the old models and not essentialy somethng new. Some people lyk it i guess. Interior s super though
