Toyota FT-86 to underpin 2014 Lexus IS - report
Toyota FT-86 Concept live at Tokyo Motor Show

A Lexus for enthusiasts?

Toyota's long-awaited FT-86 hasn't hit dealerships yet, but rumors are suggesting the jointly-developed sports car will lend its chassis to the next-generation Lexus IS.

Details are limited, but Road & Track is reporting the car will ride on a stretched version of FT-86 platform and debut in 2013. Unfortunately, the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine will be replaced by a more traditional 2.5-liter four-cylinder and a 3.6-liter six-cylinder.

While nothing is official, the news seems to support speculation that Toyota has green-lighted an FT-86 sedan. Furthermore, Lexus has made it clear they want a sportier lineup as previewed by the LFA and upcoming GS-F.

What? There are Lexus car enthusiasts? I'm betting that 94% of these leave the factory with slush boxes.

Ahhh, majority of cars sold in the US are autos anyways. I don't see your point! Manuals are going to be obsolete if they haven't been yet, look at all these DCT, PDK trannys, even most BMW's leave the factories as autos. Manual cars are yesterdays news in the car community.

@Ferrariguy Then why build driver's car if the driver is hardly driving. The automatic transmission preference in the US is really not something to be proud about. It just says that most Americans are not driving/car enthusiasts and fosters the most putrid of all driving habits, The Gangster Lean. True, most of the new clutchless transmission units shift faster than a manual, but that case is only true if you buy a car in the upper range of the market; otherwise you are pretty much stuck with a CVT and torque converter. Another note, the manual transmission car is lighter and cheaper to maintain in the long run.

CarLife, you absolutely get it 100% I fear the day when my little boy says to me "Dad, what was it like to actually drive a car?" Well son, back in the day we had cables operating the throttle blades, and sticks and pedals to control the transmission. You actually had to know what you were doing. In this day and age when the average spikey haired 20 year old has no clue how to change a tire, let alone set the clock in his AMG I fear the trend of taking fun out of cars will continue. I'm not some old fart even though it sounds like it, I just turned 30.

@ferrariguy nothing will ever beat a proper manual gearbox how can you drive properly without a clutch!!!!! these new gearboxes may change gear quicker than you can in a manual but try to drift a rwd or launch a 4wd it just aint gonna happen

I have been drifting manual and automatic cars for nearly a decade and have never had any trouble with either of them. The trick is learning how to properly make use of the car that you have at hand. Also, most off roaders are automatics, as it allows the driver to focus on hight adjustments and angle of approach. Manual transmissions might be fun, but claiming that they are superior is an utter joke, thus why virtually all high performance brands use sequential or semi-automatic transmissions.
