Promises to be sporty and efficient

After years of speculation, Porsche has officially green-lighted the entry-level Cajun crossover.

Designed to attract new and younger customers, the Cajun will be an "efficient and sporty model" with "typical Porsche features such as light weight, ease of handling and agility." Furthermore, the crossover will be based on the Audi Q5 and feature styling influenced by VW design boss Walter de' Silva.

The Cajun is expected to be launched in 2014 and will compete with the Mercedes GLK, BMW X3, and Land Rover Evoque.

Porsche is planning a new sporty model range

Stuttgart. During its meeting today, the Supervisory Board of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, laid the foundations for continuous and successful growth of the company. The Supervisory Board instructed the Board of Management to drive forward the development of a further model series up to series production. Under the working name "Cajun", this efficient and sporty model will further expand the world's most successful Porsche segment in the SUV sector. In addition to the new Cayenne, which has clearly consolidated its market position as the most successful sporty SUV in the premium segment, the "Cajun" will also have a very positive impact with its typical Porsche features such as light weight, ease of handling and agility. As an attractive entry model in the Porsche world, the "Cajun" will attract new and even younger customers to the premium brand along with the Boxster, the market leader in the segment of two-seater, mid-size sports cars.

''the crossover will be based on the Audi Q5 and feature styling influenced by VW design'' Not really a Porsche then..

it means they gonna use the same chassis based on the Audi Q5.......if I'm not mistaken, the Porsche Cayenne, VW Toureg, and Audi Q7 uses the same chassis. Same chassis doesn't mean they are all the same car....it also depends how they are build to cater what kinda buyer and if they are just a rebadged version of each other. To me, a Porsche would always be a Porsche even though it might share the same chassis with others.....

You might be right since this is the first product of Porsche beeing developed under complete VW managment which didn't happen with the Cayenne which might be sharing its platform with the Touareg/Q7 but with entire Porsche "Philosophy" since thbe develpment started before the VW "era". Regarding the design ure comment is very noncense since Walter da Silva is a great designer plus, he worked previously at Alfa Romeo yet VW don't look like Alfa's do they??? Traditionaly at the VW group VW/Audi/Skoda/Bentley belong to the tradicional/boring design lets hope they leave Porsche alone doing what the do best.....diferent sized 911's lol

Sounds great. I hope it will resemble the 1986 Paris-Dakar Porsche 959 Rally Car. The name is a little wierd but it must be a cultural thing. Here in the US it does remind me of KFC...

How much does an "entry-level" SUV with Porsche badges cost? Because emblems retail at around 60$, and you will look just as idiotic in any of the "competitors". Nevertheless, I agree, nothing trumps an idiot buying a sportscar brand SUV...

Or an idiot assuming that because a brand makes sports cars they cannot make anything else...A brand is only as powerful as it's product. Just like money, it has to be backed otherwise it's just paper. People buy a porsche for the car, not the badge. If you want the badge go buy a t-shirt for 10$.

As long as it sets the performance and quality benchmark for the sector, I guess it should be fine. I just hope Porsche is still known first and foremost as a sports car company.

Imo, there is no doubt that Porsche is moving from a niche sportscar-maker to a more mainstream luxury-sports car marque. But, probably this may be the only way to make money - if not more - to create and develop sportscars.

At the end of the day each of their models still have the porsche essence, engineering excellence and quality. That's what made Porsche what it is today, I don't understand why people are complaining, a 911 is still a 911, Porsche is still today what it stood for when it was founded. They are just expanding their market share. If you don't want to buy a small SUV then don't, they still offer the 911. Now with the 918 coming out you have more choices than ever. For those that were in the market for a small SUV and still wanted the porsche feeling in the sense of technology and quality they now have it. If anything just by adding competition they will better the whole segment by raising the benchmark. The Panamera is top notch in my books for a sports lux sedan, still a Porsche down to the very bone. You guys have to remember Porsche is not a model, it's a brand. The brand was not built on the 911, it was built on an ideal. I think that ideal is still strong with all their models.

I assume you own one of these so called luxury SUV monstrosities, or would like to own one (probably the latter). It's not that they can't make anything else, it's that by making this they soil their reputation for making good balanced sportscars. If I own a 911, the last thing I want is someone stopping next to me at the set of lights in a Cajun fully loaded with kids and giving me the thumbs up because we're both driving a Porsche... You do understand that both customers lead entirely different lifestyles? Why should they share the same brand?

@ LMS, i own a 911 and i wouldn't mind to see someone with their family in a small Porsche SUV , heck , i would even buy one if they make a diesel version. any real Porsche fan knows that the company is an engineering company first of all and they built everything from tractors to armoured vehicles and even designed tanks. if the Cajun will be a quality product (which i'm sure it will be), then that's another reason for the company to be proud and the fans to be happy.

Scratchy... I think you would buy anything with a Porsche badge, probably even a bicycle if they made one. You do seem quite eager to "do battle" in the name of anything Porsche as if convincing me, or anyone else for that matter, would actually make a difference. So here's to you driving a 911 and buying a Cajun. Enjoy. Oh, and this is not a Porsche.

I am a porschephile and a purist. I don't like it. Not because I don't like SUVs. But because this car will probably the most cross platform car in Porsche's lineup. I like purpose built Porsche. Not rebadging and ransacking VW Tiguan and Audi Q5 parts bin, to fill a gap in the market.

@LMS So lighten-up! Even a guy with a Porshce life-style have families... I thought of the same when the first Cayenne was introduced. At that time I even hated all SUV's because they were big and you couldn't see in front of them on the highway to gauge the road and traffic conditions ahead...critical for speeding down the highway at high speeds...and you were stuck with trusting the judgement of the SUV driver ahead of you...not something good. I even thought the same when the damn thing was face-lifted...let alone a DIESEL version introduced! (Which along with the V6 I have some issues with since they use a damn Audi engine...) The Carrera will be the only "real" Porsche to many people...and to me it is still the car I want to own later down the road. But having driven a Cayenne for a day I have come to change my mind and even decided to get one for my family. It's an SUV (which I needed for the family trips to the country) but believe me it's still every bit a Porsche to drive (which is good for me so I can stay entertained while driving.) It's spectacular what they were able to do with an SUV that should leave alot of sport sedans feeling shame(having owned an AMG previously I am familiar with what a good sports sedan is.) Sure it can be seen as Porsche diluting the brand, but you can also look at it as Porsche working its skills on a type of car and turning it into a Porsche.
