Speed camera lottery experiment sponsored by VW [video]

Speed camera lottery would set aside money from speeding fines to be won from law-abiding drivers

This video shows the VW-sponsored testing of a speed camera lottery concept in Stockholm.

The idea for a speed camera lottery came from American Kevin Richardson, who submitted it as part of Volkswagen's Fun Theory contest and won an award for it.

The premise for a speed camera contest is simple: As the camera catches speeders to be fined it also captures those obeying the speed limit. Some of the money raised by the fines is set aside to be won in a lottery by one of the lucky law-abiding drivers.

As Richardson says in the video: "I really believe that fun can change human behavior for the better."

Over a 3 day period, over 24,000 cars passed the experimental speed lottery camera. Average speed before the test was 32 km/h but dropped to 25 km/h while the camera was there.

naaah. Most of my friends there just say, 'Khalli walli, I keep 5000 AED aside beginning of the year for my fines.' I want to do 200 on this road, and I'll do it.

Oh my god cars are so cheap in UAE.. For the price I paid for my VW Golf here in Norway I could have bought an M5 too. That is ridiculous, need to move to Dubai..

I wonder what share of the revenues goes toward the winner, and what share goes to the greasy politicians.

I think it will work in England. But with the amount of speed cameras it should be in the hundred's of thousands. Quite an ingenious idea really. Hope it catches on.

Clever idea but I think there are flaws....what if it's a company car you are driving or someone elses car cos the owner of the car is too drunk and asleep in the back seat or whatever. When I had my BMW 335i Coupe I used to drive more aggressively than I do in my current car - I once got into a race with an E36 M3...there was nothing in it until I hit 4th or 5th gear (along a huge long straight) and ever so slightly pulled the boy racer in. It was I'll admit wreckless and stupid now looking back but I had seen him driving like a tw@ and wanted to show him he wasn't all that.

Do you get a bonus for passing at exactly the speed limit? ;-)
