German tuner takes the Atom 3's turbocharged 2.0 liter, four-cylinder engine and dials it up to 340 PS (250 kW)

German tuner Wimmer RS has added a few extra horses to the Ariel Atom 3 that go a long way on this very lightweight car.

Wimmer takes the Atom 3's turbocharged 2.0 liter, four-cylinder, Honda-sourced engine and dials it up to 340 PS (250 kW) from the series 300 PS (221 kW / 296 bhp). Torque goes up to 282 Nm (208 lb-ft). With a curb weight of just 469 kg (1034 lbs) on the Ariel Atom 3, that bump in power is good for a 0 to 100 km/h sprint time of just 2.8 seconds. 200 km/h (124 mph) is achieved in 7.1 seconds.

The tuner adds the extra 40 PS (29 kW / 40 bhp) by means of an ECU remapping, a turbocharger overhaul, a fuel pump conversion and the addition of a sport exhaust.

The Ariel Atom 3 has no doors and sports a bare tube frame with internal shock absorbers. It has a push-rod suspension with dampers at the top. It is designed for pure performance.

Extra power - high performance sports car Ariel Atom 3 300 by Wimmer RS
Wimmer RS has tuned the Atom 3 300 up to 340 hp

The Ariel Atom is one of the fastest street cars, maybe the strongest sprint 4-cylinder series car in the world. The standard Atom 3 300 is driven by a turbocharged up to 300 hp two-liter four-cylinder Honda engine. With a weight of only 469 kg, it can easily keep up not only with super sports cars - after the power increase at Wimmer RS it can put some of them in the shade.

A vehicle like a rocket: only 469 kg weight, no doors, no luxury. The Atom is equipped with the unique internal shock absorbers. The suspension is operated via push-rods - the damper struts are at the top. The tube frame replaces the body. This provides rigidity, low weight and maximum safety for corner speeds.

The power increase at Wimmer RS includes the following reconstruction measures: Wimmer engine optimization software, compressor overhaul, fuel pump conversion and sport exhaust system together with Rennkat. Whopping 340 hp and 282 Nm are the result. With such powerful Japanese engine in the rear, this 469-kg rocket accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds - Atom achieved 200 km/h in just 7.1 seconds

Direct air suction sounds like a hissing, and by this modification, exhaust system with optimized back pressure from Wimmer RS allows to hide the entire power behind the seat, so you will hear a wonderful sound.

This is such a cool, fun car. Certainly more power doesn't hurt it, but I'm not sure that a car of its weight and guiding philosophy really benefits that much by getting lots more muscle.

7.1 sec for a 0 to 200km/h sprint? Sorry Wimmer, but I don?t believe this. A BMW S1000 RR with 200hp and 200kg makes 7.0sec sprints, but with far better weight/power ratio...and traction on the bike is better!

The atom has a much better traction (due to the friction)...the bimmer lose a lot of power, that's why ;)

@charlemagne: That?s your opinion. Motorcycles have a better traction than a 2wd car. In a "Car&Driver" test the 300hp Ariel runs 161km/h in 6.4sec. So your really think that it will do the 200km/h in 7.1sec after an ECU remapping?

40hp more and some tweaking it can do it! if we choose to lose some topspeed

@ tom43 : I do! It's quite possible. A car also corner better than a bike (we're talking performance / special prepared / f1 car for instance) Friction is better when the force aplied on the surface (the weight) is bigger. It doesn't matter the surface' area but the force. hence a car has a better transfer of the power to the surface than a motocycle. So, if we're talking a 1034 lbs 2wd ariel, 340 ps, a smart gear, well chosen tyres... than yes, it's possible to beat that bmw.

0-124 in 7.1??? Wow. This thing has around 640hp/ton. Unbelieveable.

doesn't Atom has enough traction issue to get it off the line and low speed corners?
