Fiat and Chrysler have announced plans to invest more than 1 billion euros into the Mirafiori plant in Turin, Italy.
Details are limited, but the facility will produce new crossovers for Alfa Romeo and Jeep. The Alfa will compete with the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes GLK while the Jeep variant will replace the Compass and Patriot.
Besides the joint Alfa-Jeep, the factory will also build the Giulia sedan and estate. Little is known about them, but Sergio Marchionne previously confirmed they would be based on a Chrysler platform.
The first vehicles are scheduled to roll off the assembly line in late 2012 and they will be exported globally.
