800 Opel police cars ordered for the German state of Hesse

It's not uncommon to see police cars in Germany supplied by the country's big-three premium brands: Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

But this time, in the German state of Hesse, police have opted for something a little less expensive but just as local - the Opel Insignia Sports Tourer.

The German state has announced a large purchase of 800 patrol cars from Opel's Special Vehicles unit, the first 25 of which we see delivered here in the photos. The next 75 will arrive before the end of the year.

The Opel Insignia Sports Tourer deputized for police duty comes with a few special equipment features including additional LED rear warning lights, digital and analog radio receivers and a pull out tray for the trunk that can also be modified to fit a canine cage to house a police dog.

Ist "Hessen" and not "Hesse". And you forgot VW as a policecar. In my city, 98% of the policecars are VWs. There are Tourans, Passats and the T5. No BMWs or Audis - but a few E-Classes...

...and Opel has a long tradition as basic cars for police vehicles. There were alot of Omega, Frontera, Vectra and Astra in Germany. Even some amall Corsa for the city patrol.

The Passat and the Touran aren't really jaw droppers, but the Insignia, I have always found it utterly ugly. Even the present Skoda Octavia looks better and the Superb is way over it.. and probably cheaper! Of course, that would mean that the order money goes to the Czech Republic and not Germany, but Skoda is under German ownership and Opel sits under the GM dome, so it wouldn't be such a difference...

In Germany it has nothing to do with "opted for something a little less expensive". It depends on the state which police cars are used (Hessen=Opel). In the Saarland which is adjacent to and historically closely tied to France, vehicles from French companies as well as European Ford are used as police cars. The Bavarian State Police uses mainly BMW and Audi vehicles, as both companies are based in Bavaria (BMW in Munich and Audi in Ingolstadt). In the eastern states of Germany, mostly Volkswagens are in use (Volkswagen is based in Wolfsburg, close to the eastern states). The Hessian police prefer Opel cars (General Motors-brand Opel is based in R?sselsheim near Frankfurt am Main in Hessen). Baden-W?rttemberg (where Mercedes is based) mostly uses Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen brand cars for their police force.

Thanks for the explanation. It all makes sense now - why when I go or pass through Bavaria I always see BMW's and Audis.Up until now I thought that the purchase of Police cars was a federal matter in Germany, as it is in Belgium.
