By 2020 Audi expects its EV sales to be in the six-figure range and plans to have 5 percent of its lineup be electric cars

Audi believes there's a future for EVs in the coming years and the German automaker wants to be the top premium brand for electric cars by the end of the decade.

"By 2020, we want to be the leading premium seller of electric vehicles. We will successively bring out a variety of hybrid models and electric vehicles, such as our first plug-in hybrid in 2014," said Franciscus van Meel, Audi's manager for electric mobility strategy, in the Autoweek/Automotive News story.

Van Meel, speaking at a technical workshop at the company headquarters, did not provide any further details on that new plug-in hybrid model due in 2014.

Audi will also be introducing a slate of hybrids and electric cars over the next few years. Those will include hybrid versions of the Q5, A6 and A8 coming in 2011 and 2012. The R8 e-tron is scheduled for launch in 2012 too.

The e-tron division of the Ingolstadt-based automaker was exclusively established to develop electric vehicles.

The plan is for Audi to have 5 percent of its lineup consist of electric cars by 2020. Audi says it expects electric car sales for the brand to be in the six figures by then.

Pretty ambitious statements. Considering that plug in hybrid vehicles have been on the road since 2008 and your first hybrid vehicle is said to arrive at 2014! Then within 6 years you expect to be leader. I guess that by premium leader it can be expected that you basically mean you will make it look pretty and charge out the nose for it.

just like Audi came late to the mid size "crossover" SUV segment. Seems that they hit a homerun with the Q5 dealers are sold out 2 years after the car has been on the road.

Will GM become the premium leader? That would be the equivalent of me asking you if the VW Group will be the leader. You need to be more specific. Plus GM isn't the only player in this game and the game moves very fast. Toyota, Fisker, Tesla, Mercedes, and many others are allready producing hybrid vehicles. The only hybrid vehicle Audi has produced so far that comes to mind (correct me if I'm wrong) was the Audi A4 Duo which was such a fail they only produced 60 of them. The Q7 hybrid 4.2 FSI was for developmental purposes only and never made it into mass production, they still had a lot to learn. In contrast producing a crossover SUV is a relatively easy thing to do. Use a pre-existing car chassis and put a larger body on it, make it look nice inside and out and your done. That's a little easier than developing new technologies to push the envelope of vehicle engineering. Audi is now forming an aliance with Japanese company Sanyo to produce batteries and electronic components. I never buy Sanyo products because they suck, they make awefull consumer electronics. But like I said before Audi will make it look pretty, and charge out the nose for it.

better to make a car pretty and charge 'out the door' for it than to make a POS and charge anything for it. and if you think audi only makes pretty little toys you're very mistaken. audi hit a home run with nearly every new product they've been coming out with recently. i think it's a bit too early to be cynical of their potential.
