Wheego LiFe EV debuts in LA
2011 Wheego Whip LiFe

Costs more than the Nissan Leaf

If you're in the market for an overpriced Chinese copy of the Smart fortwo, Wheego is about to become your best friend as they have just unveiled the 2011 Whip LiFe.

While there isn't much to say about the exterior styling, the cabin is outfitted with luxurious items such as a heater, CD player, and "DOT (Department of Transportation) approved seats belts." If that sounds a little basic, you can opt for a $1,995 (€1,455 / £1,240) air conditioner.

Motivation is provided by a 30 kWh lithium-ion battery which sends power to an electric motor that produces 20 hp (15 kW / 20 PS) and 95 lb-ft (129 Nm) of torque. This enables the 2,667 lb (1,210 kg) LiFe to hit a top speed of 65 mph (105 km/h) and travel up to 100 miles (161 km) on a single charge.

Scheduled to launch in December, the LiFe will be priced from $32,995 (€24,070 / £20,555) which is $215 (€155 / £135) more than the Nissan Leaf.

"In the market for an overpriced Chinese copy of the Smart fortwo" - Am I ever!! Thanks WCF and Wheego!!!! Seriously though, that looks awful. Like, failed to sell any in the 1990s awful. Only an idiot would pay that much for that car, be it powered by batteries, petrol or combustible liquid gold.

Unless Daimler Smart licensed out their exterior/interior design, this company should be sued and banned from selling this car anywhere. I can't stand plagiarism and will not reward it. What's more, who in their right mind would ever pay $33,000 of hard-earned money to buy junk like this when they can go buy a properly-engineered Leaf? What are they thinking? I wouldn't even buy this POS at half the price!

It kinda looks like a Smart, but then again it doesn't. Theres at least as many differences as there is similarities. Just a few differences; nose longer. 4 stud wheels, Smart has 3 stud. Lamps all different shapes to Smart. That said, there IS a Chinese Smart clone, which does look very much like a 451 Smart.

This car is a joke in all. 20 PS to accerlate 1200 kg is uncredible unefficiently. The price for the whole car and the air conditioner is much to high. See the better fitted french and japanese conceptions for derial production. They are so much better and not more expensive. And at least: it's a shame to don't find an own design for a car!

So, "LiFe".... Is the marketing team headed by a 14 year old girl, that they need the model name in alt-caps? Or is LiFe some strange Lithium-Iron concoction? /hate
