Flavio Briatore has rued Ferrari's strategy mistake that cost his charge Fernando Alonso a third drivers' world championship last Sunday.

The Italian team has acknowledged the strategy mistake of following Mark Webber in for an early pitstop during the recent Abu Dhabi finale.

"For Fernando it should have been a completely different race," Briatore, who is still the Spaniard's manager, told the La Repubblica newspaper.

"They should not have even thought about Mark Webber, because Fernando was fast," added the Italian, whose company also manages Webber.

So how did Ferrari make such a fundamental mistake?

"Hard to say," Briatore answered. "Maybe they misinterpreted when Webber hit the wall. Mark didn't do it (pit) as a tactic, but because he had hit the wall with his wheel."

Briatore refused to say that Alonso would now be champion if he had been sitting on the Ferrari pitwall.

"The day after a race, everyone is wiser," he said. "The day before and during the race itself is the hardest, when the decisions must be made in a second amid the risk of a mistake."

Briatore also criticised the Abu Dhabi track layout for not allowing Alonso to recover from the error by overtaking Vitaly Petrov.

"It is a scandal that a crucial race track does not allow a single pass," he said.

"Monaco is fair enough, but Abu Dhabi is in the middle of a desert where they could easily build the right straights and curves.

"I'm sorry for Fernando. He is a phenomenal driver who drove a brilliant season," added Briatore.

As far as I watched on last sunday post race forum on BBC, Briatore isn't present Alonso's manager.

I agree, all those new circuits are as flat as a dime. Drivers only can make a difference on non-coward tracks like Imola, Spa Francorchamps, Bathurst, Brasil, Road Atlanta. These are the kind of circuits that give excitement to the audience.

i'm sorry, but i do not see how a race track prevents the great and "currently best" driver on the grid Fernando Alonso from overtaking just one car in front of him, while, in the same time and on the same track, newcomer Cobayashi (hope i spelled it right) could overtake. Hell, there were dousens of overtakes in that race. It's pretty arrogant from Mr. Briatore to demand a specially designed track that could allow Alonso to overtake his rivals. If he's such a brilliant pilot, he should have overtaken several of them and become a champion...

That's bullshit ! Don't blame the track if Alonso hasn't been able to overtake a third-class driver... That's why he doesn't deserve to be World Champion and Vettel does, period.

why to these guys always want the easy way. don't blame the track and especially Petrov. He (Petrov) is racing for position. So if you want the world championship stop making excuses and just go race like the rest of the drivers do.

Petrov drove really well last Sunday. Alonso didn't have the pace to get by him. The track is a problem though. It may look beautiful and has an exciting format but it is boring to watch racing there because there are so few overtaking opportunities. I witnessed this whilst watching F1, GP2, GT1, and even V8 Supercars. In my mind this is Tilke at his worst, and I'm not usually one to aim criticism at him. A lot of the great circuits in the world have one thing that most of Tilke's circuits do not, ELEVATION CHANGES. Tracks that have their layout dictated by the contour of the terrain tend to be much more interesting to drivers and viewers. That said, twilight to night racing rocks! Would love to see more of the Asian/flyaway rounds following suit.

Petrov did a better job than Alonso on the day.. thats why he kept Alonso behind him. The track layout didn't help granted but drivers at this level can't blame the layout for there inability to overtake. hitar potar mentioned Kobayashi last year he overtook everything so it is possible.

Kobayashi had nothing to lose. Alonso had everything.
