2012 Veloster will take first bow at the Detroit auto show in January sporting a 1.6 liter direct-injection engine

According to Autoblog, Hyundai has confirmed that its upcoming Veloster model will debut at the Detroit auto show in January.

The Veloster is a compact sports model that Hyundai has hinted is benchmarked against the VW Scirocco. Although, they may want to consider changing the name for the European market since Velo means bicycle in countries like France and Switzerland.

The 2012 Veloster is expected to come with a 1.6 liter, direct-injection gasoline/petrol engine producing 122 PS (90 kW/121 hp) and 155 Nm (114 lb-ft) of torque. A 1.6-liter turbocharged unit will follow with a more robust output of 177 PS (131 kW/175 hp).

Autoblog is reporting, though, that the U.S.-spec Veloster's 1.6 will have 138 bhp (103 kW) and 123 lb-ft of torque (167 Nm).

The Autoblog report also states that the 2012 Hyundai Accent model will debut later in 2011 at the New York auto show in the spring.

The Koreans have arrived, but they are just getting started! Hyundai's progress is synchronised with Kia's in much the same way with Jaguar and Land Rover. Great stuff!
