New World Champion sheds tears

Sebastian Vettel cried into his radio under the Abu Dhabi lights on Sunday as he crossed the finish line and became F1's youngest ever world champion.

The 23-year-old German, now leading the standings for the very first time in his career, had entered the race as the underdog, behind Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber in points and dogged all weekend with suggestions he should move over and let his teammate past.

But Vettel won commandingly from pole position, while a crucial strategy mistake triggered by an early safety car, and an unmoveable Vitaly Petrov in a Renault, left Ferrari's Alonso stranded in seventh place.

Spaniard Alonso let his emotions spill over as he gesticulated angrily at Russian Petrov after the chequered flag, but he later congratulated the new champion and said Petrov "drove very well" in defence.

Former long-time championship leader Webber, meanwhile, finished the race just eighth and the championship just third, and was emotional in his post-race interviews with the media.

Asked by the BBC if he will be back in 2011, he answered simply: "Yeah."

Congratulations to Vettel to become a new world champ. Surprisingly, Alonso was showing gestures to Petrov, that he couldn't pass after the race. Anyways, great season & great race.

Congrats to Vettel, Ferrari can only blame themselves, retarded strategy for both their drivers. would have been good if Hamilton wasnt help up by another Renault aswell!! oh well, great season look forward to KERS next year ;)

A deserved Championship to Vettel who has driven brilliantly and maintained a great attitude under pressure in the final races to come from behind and pull off what looked highly improbable. Well done.

Unlike most of you, i think formula 1 is at a loss with Sebastian and Red Bull winning this year. I believe what makes the formula 1 a great sport is natural talent and being an underdog. That's why when people like Nico Rosberg win you know it's because he's fought hard and shown talent not because a driver from his sister team has let him through or because his team has a bigger budget than most. I think Mark would've been a far far better world champion than Sebastian and moreover i think Alonso should have been world champion for fighting hard towards the end of the season. For anyone who thinks vettel deserved to win, really? Where's the talent in winning with a far superior car. If he's got talent, i have yet to see it and for anyone who puts alonso down, just look at what he achieved in a renault against 7 time world champion Michael Shumacker and see if you or Vettel could achieve that under the same circumstances! Next year, Alonso will be back to show the wannabes how it's done! Say what u say but Alonso is pound for pound better than anyone out there including Shumacher right now! He can win races with a car that is far from the best and that's what makes a real world champion. Keep going Alonso and hope you have all the luck in the world next year!

as much as i agree about the underdog being important i fail to see how a 2 times world champion piloting a car from the most successful team ever is more of an underdog than a 23 year old who has never won a championship before in a car from a 5 year old team that has never won before either.

also, if vettel won in a far superior car, webber can be accused of the same. plus, red bull has the whole "we wont do team orders, and we still win" thing going

didn't vettel won a grand prix in a torro rosso?

Alonso won 2 titles because the Renaults were far superior. Vettel won despite having mechanical failures. with a reliable car , Vettel would have won last year. he has more raw talent than any other current F1 driver and he can only improve himself. prepare for the Era of Vettel.

I have to agree with scratchy996: Alonso may be a very good driver and win without having the best car, but the titles, he won them with the best package of the field. Also, as ashtonchan mentioned Vettel is capable of doing the same thing: victory with a far slower car. All in All, I think Vettel is a very worthy champion. He was clearly the fastest at RedBull this year and it would have been somewhat unfair for Webber to win it, just because the "mechanical misfortune fairy" avoided him more. Ferrari had too much of a bad car to win any titles this year, and McLaren also. Although Hamilton might have played close with less childish mistakes...

"he won them [titles] with the best package of the field." So did Jenson Button. And Michael Schumacher (at Ferrari at least). And Ayrton Senna at least once. Isn't that kind of how it works? Motorsport is a sport of two halves. The best driver can have a crap car and be nowhere. Similarly, a crap driver in a great car can't make the most of it.

Congratulations Vettel.... well deserved champion. Funny Alonso was probably soo upset about Petrov because he couldn't radio in to complain and get him moved out the way!! ; )

alonso is a bad joke and as you saw at the end of the race he let his anger take control of him against Petrov, he's not a good man at all and neither a good player. And you 3MOCIONA are a stupid joke too by saying some crazy shits that only you believe in.

@ Cootje I wouldn't go as far saying i wish he die sometime but i agree, he's too cocky for his own good and hopefully he'll have the grace to grow up! @scratchy996 As long as adrian nuewy designs his car, then i think he will be a strong competitor because clearly the mans a genius! As for raw talent, how do you know? He had the fastest and best designed car on the grid, being the fastest doesn't make him raw talent in my book! Neither does crashing and blaming his team mate! I have yet to see his talent! That's the problem with new formula 1 fans, they're fans of the fastest driver and the best team and that's it. Nothing less will do! Well formula 1 was its best this decade with Alonso and Shumacher fighting eachother, not this new breed of young immature, wannabes!

Half agree with you... but you cant call Vettel, Button, Hamilton, Webber all wannabes!... They are all good drivers in the own right. Thats why they are in F1. Vettel was the fastest man when it mattered. As for crashing into Webber... Senna crashed into Prost.... does that make him a "wannabe" ?.....BTW... F1 fan for 18 years before you say anything.

@ strongmenadacoooo or watever ur name is I have been a formula 1 fan for more than 10 years and i have appreciated how good he has been against a 7 time world champion. Me a joke? I think ur the joke, 'mr this is my 3rd year watching formula and i am the bestest best formula 1 fan in the world'. Stop talking out of your smeared ass! Get potty trained, learn to wipe your ass and get lost from formula 1. Formula 1 was better when real fans loved it! Not wannabees like you! Neither the sport or i will miss you!

At the end of the day the Man we all wanted to see lose, did - Alosno! Lets hope next season goes down to the last race again, with 3-4 within a shout of winning the title. It's not often that these kinda seasons come along - so fingers crossed for next year. KERS and adjustable rear wing will hopefully allow for more overtaking. I personlly would like to see the re-fueling put back into place.

@Ducati 46 I consider rookies who think they know it all and are immature and cocky wannabees. If you think they're part of that than you must agree with me in some way! @Benson Firstly, speak for yourself! Secondly, its Alonso not alosno and thirdly the good thing is Alonso has many more fans than enemies and veryone in f1 looks up to him and admires his talent and these fans are proper passionate fans especially the italians. Your at no loss mate to him or the sport and i think ur comment says more about you then it does him!

No my nickname is 'Mister Stig' not MR (should be Mr BTW) Proper names, in English should be spelt with a capital letter, followed by lower case letters... if you wish to correct someone, at least attempt to get it right yourself. @ DUCATI46, you are correct, this is a car forum, and as such we should really overlook the odd spelling/grammer mistake, so lets all let this rest now?
