New set of shots come closer to a seemingly undisguised 911 than ever before

These are the best spy shots yet that we've seen of the upcoming 2012 Porsche 911.

This time we're up close to two coupe prototypes seemingly undisguised (although at this stage of the development process prototypes can still be hiding under false body panels). Noteworthy is how the second prototype is showing the retractable sunroof opening of the next-generation model.

We're also getting a far sharper look at the new rear end design, particularly the frame between the taillights.

The next 911 will feature a stop/start system and regenerative braking becoming standard technology on the model, in order to improve fuel-economy and CO2 emissions.

An updated 3.6 liter inline 6-cylinder good for 365 bhp (272 kW / 370 PS) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque will be the entry-level power plant. A revised 3.8 liter 6-banger will be fitted to the Carrera S model producing 415 bhp (309 kW / 421 PS) and 440 Nm (325 lb-ft) of torque. Transmissions will be a choice of the seven-speed PDK sequential double-clutch gearbox or the more pedestrian six-speed manual.

Look for the next 911 to make its debut sometime next year.

Seriously, this looks EXACTLY like the 997, except for the bit of additional length.. 996 to 997 was a far bigger step.

Yawn. Typical porsche. Rinse and repeat design for another 100 years.

So is this the 998 finally or some 997.3 version? When can we expect the Carrera S in the US?

That should be a boxer 6, not inline 6. The extra 10cm/4" wheelbase is really noticable... Looks "big", almost like the 928!

Looks much bigger than current model. I is gonna have 997 Turbo - looking front bumper and longer LED lights, like Cayenne has.

Inline engine???? Yeah of course, and if you like you can also order a V8 or a Wankel Engine. I dont think the smallest engine will be a 3,6l. Downsizing is the key

I don't know about you guys.. For me just a 360 Modena looks better than this. Porsche styling design ins't really something that turns head! Though they're fast.

I couldn't agree with you more. I think I'd appreciate the styling more if I didn't see 100 of them every day!

Wishing the 911 had revolutionary design is like wishing Ferrari were reliable...

911's have never been about styling (except the detail execution). They're about PERFECT steering, great brakes, the sound of the flat-6 and the exceptional ride and handling. With the engine in the "trunk" nothing else handles quite like a 911 (for better or for worse in older models...). Either you "get it", and you're hooked like Opium, or you don't so you couldn't care less. Also, the cost of owning a 911 is substantial, but owning ANY Ferrari is considerably more!

at least it needs some change on the shape, otherwise how do I and the people on the street know whether I'm driving a 997 or 998?
