Debuts in Los Angeles

With the Los Angeles Auto Show just around the corner, Hyundai has released a new teaser image of the 2011 Elantra.

While the company declined to release additional information, the Elantra's Korean cousin - the Avante - was already unveiled at the Busan Motor Show. This means we can expect four-door coupe styling, HID (High Intensity Discharge) headlights and LED taillights.

Inside, the cabin will be vastly improved with higher quality materials and a modern design. If it's anything like the Avante, we can expect up-market options such as ambient lighting, heated rear seats, and GPS navigation.

No word on what powers the Elantra, but the Avante features a 1.6-liter Gamma GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) four-cylinder engine with 140 PS (138 hp / 103 kW) and 133 lb-ft (167 Nm) of torque.

Additional information will be released later this month, so stay tuned for details.

The US-model Elantra will likely use the same engines as the Kia Forte hatchback: 2.0-liter 150 bhp and 2.4-liter 173 bhp I-4's combined with six-speed automatic or manual transmissions.

I will repeat this again and again, "this is the car that would be more successful than any ASIAN car" It is a game changer and got the appeal.

Hyundai and KIA have done a spectacular job in raising their game. Their products are now competitive, if not quite top of class in terms of the hardware, and better value to boot. Their designs have leaped over most of the other Asians; the Sonata is a striking car that looks expensive and puts the rest of the class to shame. The Elantra continues that theme. Meanwhile, Toyota continues on their stolid, boring ways, Nissan caters to the bizarre and quirky, while Honda does their odd mashups incorporating elements from other makes. Subaru still has yet to comprehend the importance of design, and can be counted on to present each iteration/correction as finished product within short time frames.

That headlamp design shows the Koreans (Hyundai/Kia) are proud of their Oriental origin. Real corporate confidence from these two! Like the Skoda jokes from the 80s, Korean car jokes are now dead in the water! The Elantra used to be anonymous in the entire Hyundai range, leaving the Coupe as lone star flying the flag for Hyundai with swoopy curves, competitive engines and impressive handling dynamics. The new one is already one of the bonafide GT coupes on the planet with powerful V6 (and now V8) engines (for the American market). However, the Sonata, Santa Fe and Equus are now so good it's getting Europe's elite bothered under the collar! This Elantra though is Hyundai's best yet. It's, wait for it, sexy!
