BMW X7 back on the table?

BMW X7 back on the table?
Modified BMW X5 sketch as X7

With Chinese demand for large, premium vehicles constantly on the rise, BMW may be considering reviving the X7

Nice catch from BMW blog.

Buried in a Wall Street Journal story is a news nugget that BMW is considering reviving plans for a big SUV - a possible X7 - banking on the ever-expanding sales of large vehicles in China and on the hopes of an economic recovery in the United States. Those two would be the main markets for a possible X7 full-sized SUV.

Here's the quote from the Wall Street Journal story:

"So, BMW is downshifting. While it makes one big sedan especially for the Chinese market, it isn't ramping up production enough to fill all its Chinese orders. It wants to make sure it has sufficient supply for the U.S. and Germany.

The company is also counting on the U.S. to rebound more quickly than doom-and-gloomers think, making rebalancing less necessary than the leaders gathered in Seoul believe. It is even reconsidering its decision to cancel a new large SUV, which was meant mainly for U.S. buyer."

BMW canceled the X7 project during the economic crisis of 2008, which hit the automotive industry particularly hard. But now, with strong demand for large, premium vehicles in China, such as the extended-wheelbase variant of the 5-series, the X7 stands a better chance in the marketplace of the coming years.

The problem is, of course, that the economic recovery in the United States just isn't happening.

BMW is better off simply betting on the Chinese.

Really don't see too much of it's appeal unless it actually is a 7er SUV. I think that would be a great idea, even if it does cost about the same or more than the 7er. What is lacking in the market is a big SUV whose interior is on par with a big luxury sedan.

There's this new company called Land Rover. They make this big truck called a Range Rover. You should google it...

Problem is Range Rover is 5 seaters while Discovery is too rugged for some people to consider buying 7 seaters wagon. However I actually prefer if it gets 6 seaters structure as R-Class (driver in front, husband and wife in 2nd row and children in 3rd row). The question is will BMW build X7 with option of RWD and lower ground clearance (I do believe Chinese there might need this option as AWD is unnecessary and high ground clearance is problem for female).

Allow me to clarify, then. What is lacking in the market is a big SUV whose interior is on par with a big luxury sedan. "Big" being the operative word, as in Q7 size. The Range Rover Vogue is not as big as the Q7 or GL in terms of space. And I did mean with seven seats, which is also lacking in the Range Rover.

X5 can't carry more than 4/5 adults in comfort. I know it is weird, but it maybe as weird as people in republic of China think about british sportcar like Caterham, Morgan and Ariel.

Wow...totally awesome... But, is anyone actually making any money out of these huge monsters? Seriously guys, for the model to be profitable it has to hit a certain volume in sales right? Are they really making any profit with these SUVs? Or is it all just a testoterone driven show of each others might. Either way...I would love to be on the driver's seat of one those monsters.... It would definitely make my manhood feel bigger...

Yeah the gas companies are... The car probably has a fuel capacity larger than 100L. You need to be one rich person to afford that kind of BMW.

A Range Rover rival? What's next? X7 based RR Ghost SUV? Soon we will see BMW build more of its X models than its coupes and hope they won't do a Honda by focusing on its passengers car than sports cars.

BMW must exercise caution; even Porsche are having to slam on their ceramic brakes on product dilution! Gordon Gekko's echo must be ringing in BMW executives' minds, "Greed is Good!"

Simply...why? Why do we need yet another vehicle made to "duplicate" others in this segment of the automotive world? Here is a novel idea...don't build this, instead spend the money in tweaking the more bread-butter cars and make them more dependable, better and lower in price.

In case of new 7-series I wrote a comment about BMW's market orientation. Hence we live in shadow of globalized macroeconomics we should look to other direction in Europe for buying a civilized car. Only problem is what direction it might be. In that BMW thing I will look like an idiot for sure.
