Audi working on RS1 model - report

RS1 model will be fitted with a 2.0 liter TFSI power plant tuned to around 220 PS (162 kW)

According to a report in the German auto magazine Auto Bild, Audi will be calling a sport-version of the A1 the RS1.

We've reported before on how VW and Audi are modifying their PQ25 platform to allow for an all-wheel drive A1 variant and Polo R to be produced. But Auto Bild is reporting that a quattro-fitted A1 variant will not be called the S1, as was previously reported, but Audi will skip that moniker altogether and badge the variant as the RS1.

That RS1 model will likely feature a 2.0 liter TFSI, the same as in the Golf GTI model, tuned to around 220 PS (162 kW) - in order to outdo the 211 PS (155 kW) of the Mini Cooper JCW which Audi sees as the RS1's main competitor.

Distinguishing the RS1 visually will be a unique body kit that will include wider fender flares.

Expect the RS1 to hit the market in early 2012.

(oh forgot everything on an Audi is an extra!) ...ouch! ...I understand that it will "compete" with the JCW ...why not use a 1.6/1.4 if they are to bring on the fight? ... they are taking the shortcut ... according to Peugeot the Prince engine in it's current iteration could be bumped up to 168KW ....and we know that BMW-PSA are working on a new version already ...

of course it will also out-power the GTI which is also 155kw - same as the JCW - hope it's light but being an Audio it probably has everything that provides luxury included (oh forgot everything on an Audi is an extra!)

Please, if by some chance someone over at Alfa reads wcf, please make that Alfa MiTO GTA. Make it epic, make it the kind of car this generation will tell the future electric-car driving generation about; something that'll make them wish they could be lucky enough to have been in one.

Does anybody here think that Audi and including it's brother brands like Porsche and Volkswagen are making way too many variants of lots and lots of models. I wonder how each one makes a profit.

Indeed I do. In fact most brands are creating niche niches, its getting silly, and customers are getting confused to what is the best car for their needs. IMHO its time to go back to basics, and reduce the amount of model's available.

let them worry about that, the more models , the better for the customers.

I dissagee, many customers don't really know what car is best for them, and end up with unsuitable vehicles - then take a loss on trade-in. Also dealerships stuggle to obtain the correct spec cars, for their stock. in many cases its a lose-lose situation.
