Jeep Grand Cherokee to underpin Maserati SUV - report
Would compete with the Porsche Cayenne
Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne has revealed the company is considering additional SUVs built off the Jeep Grand Cherokee / Dodge Durango platform.
Speaking during an earnings call, where Chrysler announced they lost $84 million in the third quarter, Marchionne discussed the possibility of building a Grand Cherokee-based Maserati. While he didn't go into detail, he stated any additional variants would be produced at the Jefferson North assembly plant in Detroit.
As we have previously reported, Maserati has been toying around with the idea of an SUV for a number of years. Back in 2003, the company unveiled the Kubang concept (pictured) at the North American International Auto Show and Kamal concept (also pictured) in Geneva.

Platform sharing... Well if they make it an improved version of the SRT8 (With a higher quality interior) this could work as a competitor to the cayenne.

Ya except the brand new Cherokee has a brand new chassis, even if it is a derivative.

Why not crossover? Maserati needs in commercially successful model. SUV could provide big sales in USA, Russia and China.
P.S. But please, don't make next Dodge Ram on this platform! Clients wouldn't understand it...

Well, Porsche should be happy if this makes it. They would no longer hold the title of World's Ugliest SUV.

well if that is the general idea , then why not vastly improve the JeepCherokee so that it could match the Cayenne on every front ? except that the Jeep looks more ruggedly handsome and is a bonafide 4x4 vehicle compared to the Cayenne which is a station wagon on steroids .

A Porsche Cayenne is a VW Touareg 95% based car. So, if they want to finance better the platforms and perform the market with they portfolio of Brands, they shoul really do it. the main point is How to do it. Definitlly a Maserati need to be build, or finished in Modena, Italy. if not they kill the luxus appeal of hand made exclusive Italian car. shoul start at 150.000 dollar the cheapest one, with maserati engine an all the luxus you can get, and the same platform build in America for the Alfaromeo, with sportly look but same price and quality like cherokee, or litle better please (I am from Audi Design :) )

since the Kubang was shown, It was my favorite Crossover and inspired me alot for my design-studies. I don't expect Maserati will build a SUV like that and I cannot believe the it can base on a (cheap developed) american Offroader in mass production. I hope the next Quattroporte don't base on the Chrysler 300

Almost a decade down the line in Concept form, the Maser Kubang finally seeing the light of day (under the curse of Chrysler)! The Maserati Kubang and Alfa Romeo Kamal SUV Concepts could either earn global respect or suffer total ignominy in production forms. Only time will tell when they hit showrooms soon!

Its a good idea, but it needs a restyle. Tries to be a bit too sporty

Is that Jeep's platform so good to build a Maserati on it? No, no, no! Who even in hell wants a Maserati which drives like an American barge!?

I think they should drop the R-Class proportions. They could wedge into a lower price bracket, infuse some much needed volume (considering the market) into the brand, and potentially create a breakout model for the US to get some visibility for Maserati. This could be really nice.
