CEO Stefan Jacoby says Volvo needs to get back to its Swedish roots and stop copying the Germans

Volvo's newly appointed CEO Stefan Jacoby is already at work a reshaping the Swedish brand's strategy for the future and the former VW executive says that Volvo needs to do its own thing and "stop copying the Germans."

In an interview with Autocar magazine, Jacoby, who was head of Volkswagen of America before taking over the reigns at Volvo last August, said that Volvo "has lost its distinguishing points in its products" and that the brand needs to return to its Swedish roots.

He also said that Volvo was not planning on a flagship premium sedan to rival the likes of the BMW 7-Series or the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. That's in contrast to what Li Shufu, head of Chinese automaker Geely, which now owns Volvo, said earlier this year when he expressed the desire to have a larger, luxury model in the Volvo lineup to rival the likes of the 7-Series.

Jacoby wants to see the automaker take its sales to around 800,000 units a year, from last year's 335,000, before the automaker can consider such a model.

"You can immediately recognize you're sitting in a BMW or an Audi and I don't think Volvo is there yet. Volvo at the moment is not sharp enough or in harmony with what the brand stands for," Jacoby told Autocar.

Jacoby also said that Volvo needs to simplify its production and may reduce the number of platforms its has to just one or two. Engines will also be downscaled and more focused, with Volvo dropping V8 and possibly even 6-cylinder power plants to focus solely on 4- and 5-cylinder engines and develop its electric vehicle and hybrid technology such as in the C30 EV and the V70 plug-in hybrid scheduled for 2012.

I have taken my business elsewhere since Volvo ended the RWD with the 960. Nowadays with cost cutting and downsizing, I doubt RWD will return.

Plus being RWD means more difficulty to adapt into current hybrid mainstream unless for being pure electric.

I say make your whole fleet of Volvo cars hybrids, and beat the German cars out to market, it would make a good selling point.but making the tech cheap is the hard part.

Jacoby probably sensed (in my opinion) the resurgence of Saab may one day overtook Volvo, in terms of R&D and production, and decide to play safe by returning to its roots. Though Volvo may reduce its engineering and production costs, there might be a day the Swedish car manufacturer return to increase R&D expenditure in the future; and that will depend on SJ and Geely.

He is right! Volvo need to keep his Scandinavian design and focus on saling the poin that they are good for the family: safe and usefull. Also the AWD is one point they shoul use more, because they are reliable like Scandinavian, and because everyone wants an XC70 over a V70 for the wife and childrens. In this saling point nobody need a German supercar to bring childrens to the school. they were very succesfull with the station wagon arround the world. So, please keep volvo Scandinavian identity in design to be diferent to the German luxus-sport. it's even safer and easy for the brand, because entering the Audi-Mercedes-BMW batlle could be fatal for volvo.

Amen to the CEO, the Germans are great at pretty much everything they do, and i don't just mean in the automotive world but Sweden has always been its own country, people and their great car company should reflect that. Other than this, i could never really hate on anything Volvo has done in the last 10 years. Im a fan of many of their cars, though i have to admit the C30 is an awesome hot hatch.

Sounds very good so far :) Forget about the Ford era, go back to the roots! The 850 and earlier models, that what Volvo is about! If you ask me, they should only make five cylinder turbo engine's :D Greetz from a proud 855 T5 owner

What a relief! About time. The T5 engines define Volvos and the 70s icons too. Swedish designs need redefining again.

Volvo is in that weird nich between the Premium luxury like the MB/BMW and entry level luxury like the Acura and Infiniti, yet it is European... it is a step above VW yet not quite Audi.. Like it or not Volvo's competition are all of the above Germans and Japanese. I dont know what this crack pot CEO is trying to do but it seem alot like he is trying to turn Volvo into another VW!!! Cheapening the brand, lowering the prices of all model to basically VW prices and getting rid of anything that resemble performance... The more I think about it the more it make sense this twit CEO is trying to turn Volvo into VW Junior! I own a 08 C70 if this is the way Volvo is going I am abandoning brand! 3series convertible here i come!!! Volvo do not need this guy it need someone like the CEO that turn Infiniti and Audi into a serious brand from its days when they were jokes on wheels!!! As for the T5, my c70 is a beautiful car but a turbo 5 cylinders of that size should definitely output something close to that of a nissan non-turbo 3.5 V6! The turbo 6 cylinders definitely should output alot more power than the Nissan's coveted V6! The problem with Volvo now is that it just lacks proper tuning and refinement!
