Both cabrio and coupe prototypes spotted showing new details, including a new adjustable rear spoiler

Here are the latest and some of the best shots yet of the next-generation 2012 Porsche 911.

Porsche has been testing prototypes of the next 911 for nearly two years now and this current set of pics reveals both cabrio and coupe prototypes wearing far less camo than we've seen before.

Of course, the 911 is staying close to its iconic shape, but these prototypes show new details, particularly at the rear with a new design line between the set of lights. There's also a new adjustable spoiler there and we can see how it is up in some of the photos.

For improved efficiency, the next-generation 911 will come with a stop/start system and regenerative braking as a standard feature.

Engines will also be upgraded, beginning with a revised 3.6 liter flat six producing 365 bhp (272 kW / 370 PS) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque while the Carrera S variant will be fitted with an updated 3.8 liter 6-cylinder power plant featuring 415 bhp (309 kW / 421 PS) and 440 Nm (325 lb-ft) of torque. The next-generation 911 will be available with either a six-speed manual or the seven-speed PDK.

Still ugly? Have you ever thought why the designing essence of the 911 model hasn?t changed during at least 35 years? Because it is an iconic masterpiece, an intemporal design that can?t change. And if it changes, well, I think Porsche wouldn?t be the same premium sports manufacturer anymore.

god can't wait to see this new 911, oh wait we all know it's gonna be pretty much exactly like the current one don't we? porsche's idea of a new model is the other manufacturer's idea of a facelift

i feel sorry for the designers of 911. they are restricted to their creative freedom and basically have to work over and over and tweet the same boring shape. look at that 'speedster' thing, they get all excited but the public just puke at it. no hope for the 2012 either.

Can't help it if the 911's evolutionary styling is working for Porsche. Porsche will stop making the 911 when people stop buying them.

the 911 doesn't sell that well... if you compare the corvette, the zr1 version alone almost outsells all twenty 911 models together.

How much Corvettes are being sold outside the US? 99% are being bought by americans, cause only the yanks buy this plastic GM crap on steroids.

Porsche has been one of the most profitable automobile companies of all time as opposed to hm GM... It's called tradition. The Corvette has kept its same basic shape/design theme for more than 25 years now and Porsche has been doing the same, successful with each evolution of the 911 for a pretty long time. Why they should start changing it because a bunch of people complain about it doesn't exactly register.

The back's too high now and the shoulder line over the rear wheels is too much IMO. Pretty hard to improve on perfection, which the current one is pretty close to.

I was actually looking forward to this model thinking that the shape would look closer to a 959 but its just a 997 with a face lift.

If I'm not mistaken, it will have longer LED front lights and triangled tail lights. And whole car loooks much bigger than current

I like the fact that it's become a little more muscular towards the rear. I think it wouldn't hurt for the lines to be a little sharper though....

Agree with ifudge, time to invest in 997 series- new safety regs are making life hard for the 911 profile. This new thing looks bloated and distorted, hopefully undisguised looks better.

dated ,lazily designed, nothing more than a facelift, etc. that's what people have always been saying. but ,somehow porsche's designs seem to grow on you ,and before you know it you'll find yourself saying ,"wow it ain't all that bad a car" .just wait 'till the camouflage is removed.you'll see.

this is boring .. it looks the same from time to time, porsche's designs never grow on me..can't they just design something really new ? What's the point of progress anyway ?

I just want to point out to the gentlemen that made the comment about Chevy outselling fiberglass falices at 20 to 1 ratio; you're missing a very important fact. Porsche is a low volume make. Mostly because they make QUALITY cars. The 911 in fact sells quite well. So when you hand your chevy to the valet be sure to point out that it's not the malibu he'll be parking. Lastly, there are "faster" cars around, but as far as all-around cars; there are none. None of you will ever own one let alone "track" one so this is a mute point if you decide to argue it. Porsche is the most profitable car company in the world, and they only make about 70,000 a year (includes all models). Nevertheless, I digress; I'm sure you know better than Porsche's engineers, desingers, and management. Have a nice day.

the new 911 will look more different to the 997 than you think considering theses photos. porsche always uses pre-model style carmouflage. which means head and rear light carmouflage are only some kind of "photos" of the current 997 lights. you wont confuse this car with the 997 when it's undisguised . believe it

I love my 2009 911 S Cabrio. It is the best all round sports car you can own. I will keep on buying them until they stop making them, and then who knows!

think whatever you want about quality. The zr1 is more expensive then majority of 911's sold. So even with this "quality" behind them, they are still aren't selling as many vehicles as they could have if they didn't have such an aged design.

lmao aged design. If you think a 997-2 looks as old as any 911 7+years ago, you are sadly, sadly mistaken.

@Joe_Limon, first you said "if you compare the corvette, the zr1 version alone almost outsells all twenty 911 models together. Where do you get this info??? Not even in the US does the ZR1 outsell it. Not to mention, nobody outside the US even CARES about the ZR1. As far as "aged design", the 911 is made to always look like a 911. That's what it's fans/customers want. The Corvette is no different. Chevy also has followed the same, basic layout/design since the 60s, because that's what Corvette fans/customers want. It is what it is. I do think that "aged" applies to leaf springs & overhead valves, though. Still, at the end of the day, only one of these two cars (and its maker)is respected worldwide, and not just in it's homeland. That, my friend, is the 911. All "twenty versions" of it. The same will still apply in 2020.
