Nissan Cube flops in Europe

 Nissan Cube flops in Europe
2010 Nissan Cube

Nissan has sold just 686 units of the Cube in the U.K. so far this year, 251 in Italy and 107 in the Netherlands

It may be a success in its home market, but the Nissan Cube has faltered in Europe.

Sales of the box-styled Cube, a design that can be off-putting to consumers, have been way below projections by Nissan and many of the units alloted by country remain unsold as the year comes to a close.

For the U.K., where Nissan expected to sell around 2,000 units a year, sales so far for 2010 were only 686. In Italy, where Nissan also set aside 2,000 units annually, the automaker sold just 251 Cubes in the first nine months of this year. In the Netherlands, sales so far this year are a dismal 107 units.

Dealers in the U.K. are heavily discounting the Cube, with one dealer selling a well-equipped Cube for about one-third of the list price - £10,995 instead of £15,495.

Speculation is that the Cube may be removed from the U.K. and Italian markets, and perhaps others too by next year.

The disappointing sales in Europe are in stark contrast to the Cube's Japanese roots, where the model has sold over 1 million units since its introduction in 1998 and is now in its third generation.

Sales in the U.S. are hovering at a decent 20,000 units a year.

There are quite a few of the jdm previous generations , scuttling around !!Hmmm maybe the soul swooped in before hand and latched on to our growing fascination with Kia and Hyundai !!! hmmmmmm

There's one down my street. I think they're too high risk for people. No one has the money to lose on cars they can't shift when the time comes.

considering the Fiat Panda, and other small, weird automotive concoctions sell well in Europe, I'm surprised this hasn't. And it'll certainly be more reliable than a Panda... doh figure!

I wouldn't be too sure - the Fiat Panda gets good reliability ratings for it's class, ahead of stuff like the Yaris. The Panda costs a lot less than a Cube too...

There is no diesel version in the UK. And you don't just need one, you need a decent eco friendly one.

There are two of the last generation ones in my BLOCK! I saw the current one in Orlando during my vacation and the old one looks much better... I think they really screwed this one up... The Storm Trooper facia just isn't working...bring back the round headlights.

Europeans like original cars when they're nice looking hence do not buy original cars for the sake of originality. Furthermore it's expensive for interior cheap plastic, colors are boring compared with the shape, and no innovation nor extraordinary practicality!

Well, since this car is fugly when compared to its predecessor, this is no surprise. When I still lived in the US, I was jacked up when I saw Nissan announce the Cube was going there....until I saw it.
