Volkswagen has confirmed production of the Golf VI Cabrio will commence in Osnabrück spring 2011.

During a visit to Volkswagen's Osnabrück plant Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft, Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn updated Lower Saxony’s Minister President and Volkswagen Supervisory Board member David McAllister on preparations for the start of production.

Announced a few days ago the Osnabrück site, which is the former site of the Karmann holding company, will absorb the technical development and metal units of the insolvent Wilhelm Karmann GmbH.  This includes a workforce of over 1,000.

“Over the decades, some of the most beautiful models in the automobile world have left the assembly line in Osnabrück. We will be carrying on this tradition from 2011 with the new Golf Cabrio,” Winterkorn said during the tour of the site. “The capacities and specialist skills available here are very valuable for our Group. We will be creating a total of 1,800 jobs at Volkswagen Osnabrück by the end of 2011. Osnabrück will therefore remain a high-performance automobile location in our Group alliance going forward.

"Over the decades, some of the most beautiful models in the automobile world have left the assembly line in Osnabrück. The new Golf Cabrio will be a great car. The extensive expertise in cabriolet construction that is available here is being harnessed."

Volkswagen Osnabrück was set up in early 2010 on the former site of the Karmann holding company. Just a few days ago, Volkswagen Osnabrück announced it would be integrating the technical development and metal units of the insolvent Wilhelm Karmann GmbH i. I. The Osnabrück plant with its workforce of over 1,000 will commence production of the Golf Cabrio in spring 2011.

For the short term, it's for people who are willing to pay the premium for the security of a hard top, a trunk, a sunroof, and a non-tortoise profile of a convertible based on a hatchback. With the top down, the weight approaches 50/50 weight distribution (albeit centered high). The Eos was designed as a convertible and not a decapitated sibling (even though the platform may be the same, but VW has gotten a lot of variation out of it). The Golf Cabrio offers a value-priced convertible; and it looks like the Eos will be replaced with a Passat Cabrio in 2014. No more folding hardtops for VW.

hurrahh, another bland off shoot. I agree with eas722, what's the point of the EOS. The orginal MK 1 Golf cab was ace but that's where it ended!

OK. that makes three of us. is this replacing the Eos? Or is it a rebadged Eos? Or (in the best of cases) an excuse to make a Golf GTi cabrio?

I agree, HOWEVER I think the Eos is incredibly overpriced, this car will be way cheaper.

The only way to differentiate the Eos and the Golf cabrio is the fabric roof? It is no surprise how the front of the car will look like.

I think the Golf will be the cheaper option; fabric roof, shorter in length, equivalent to the 1 series cabrio? The Eos will maybe be more upmarket, grow in size and price and keep its metal top?

Also 'Golf' has more brand recognition that 'Eos', maybe it'll eventually be a replacement?

It would appear that VW have made something of an oversight here...

Only poent with Golf Cabrio would be soft top and lower equipment than the Eos, and that will be real poent having the Golf Cabrio! Because A3 cabrio is existing, there would be same mechanic and for the markets that doesnt sell A3 cabrio, Golf will fill that gap

Or...for that matter... What about the Beetle Convertible? That's about in the same price range as what a Golf Cabrio would cost (+a few bucks more.) BTW...I had a Mk1 Cabriolet and it was a nice car to take for a ride during fall nights...I never paid to much attention to the gay factor... But it was a very useful car...with the top down I helped my friend move his sofa to his new apartment...not too bad for a 20 year old Golf...

1. In 2004-2006,when Eos was build, the president of VAG was Bernd Pischetsrieder and CEO of VW brand was Wolfgang Bernhard. 2. Eos is bigger then Golf and has 2+2 places.
