Pontiac is dead after 84 years
1967 Pontiac GTO

GM's agreement with Pontiac dealers ended on October 31st

Pontiac is dead.

The GM brand is now officially gone as the automaker's agreement with Pontiac dealers came to an end on October 31st.

But the end of Pontiac began last year when GM decided it would kill the brand and ended production on all its models. Its slate of products over the last decade were mostly failures in the market place and not considered desirable cars by consumers.

But that was not always the case. Back in the 1960s, in its heyday, Pontiac was the number three brand in the United States, behind fellow GM brand Chevy and Ford vehicles.

Pontiac also spawned some classic models such as the GTO and the Trans-Am.

Pontiac took its name from the town in Michigan and was a brand GM created back in 1926. Sales peaked in 1973 at 920,000 units.

R.I.P. Pontiac, GM got its head out of its ass and starting making great cars under your name plate after too long, The Solstice and G8, G6 and G5 were great cars, but too little too late. You will be missed despite the thoughts of the ignorant.

As an iconic piece of American history Pontiac will surely be missed. Shame on WCF for putting a picture of the Aztec on it's gravestone. Thats like putting a bottle of red wine and sleeping pills on the grave of Jimi Hendrix. Sure that's what led to his demise but we like to celebrate what he contributed to all our lives instead.

Great point, it seems like its satirical, instead of putting a picture of a GTO Judge or a G8, they put an Aztek, despite its hideous looks it was just ahead of its time but still the wrong car for the point.

Sort of YES! that means no more vulgar cars like the Aztek can be made by them, but we will be lacking in the GTO and G8 :(

Here are some movies and TV shows that had Pontiacs in them. May we all remember the good ones and not this horrible one! Knight Rider, Smokey and the Bandit, XXX, Transformers, Bonneville, Pontiac Moon, Two Lane Blacktop, Dazed and Confused, Billy Madison, and many many others I'm sure.

A Trans-AM GTA version of the Camaro with a proper redesign, aesthetically, would have to look incredible.

Nothing much to say? Why say anything? I thought this was a place for world car fans. I think that as enthusiasts we use cars as a means of self expression. Anytime we lose an outlet for that expression it should be a somber experience. Some people really care about these things and in a sense just maybe a small part if them died today as well. I have never owned a Pontiac myself but to come on here and say "they had it coming" makes you in my opinion no better than those extreme Christian dimwits who sing songs and hold up protest signs thanking god for another dead soldier at the funerals of our fallen heroes. Do us all a favor and next time you have a bright idea, just let it go.

Amen to that BM Gearhead, regardless what make is your particular fancy it should be a shame, a disappointment, a tragedy and any number of other terms when any car company fades into history. Whether its Pontiac, SAAB(almost happened) or any other kind of make, its a loss to the auto community as a whole. It makes me ponder what makes a true car fan, as i imagine car fans like cars in general.

GM currently has four live brands. Cadillac I understand - luxury, cutting edge tech, dynamics etc. Chevy (USA) makes just about every possible type of car imaginable - cheap n cheerful Aveo, Hi-value Cruze, tech wunderkind Volt, bruisers Suburban and Sierra, muscle-car Camaro and sportscar/supercar Corvette. This makes Buick and GMC redundant. Why not kill those two and let poor Pontiac live on as a much-appreciated performance brand? It had more personality than those two combined! Sad times :(

RIP Pontiac...but GM HEY!!! Keep it alive for some exclusive models like a Trans Am, G8, and solstice. What a waste of marketing. Keep it for low volume special automobiles!!!

I'll always be a Dodge man but as a fan of all cars, i'ld love to see a nice Trans-Am version of the of the current Camaro with a substantial skin work over.

Xanavi.. have you seen the Lingenfelter 455 Trans-Am. based on the current camaro, 'butchered' to look like a bull-nose transam 455HO (71/72)

It should have been Chevy they killed off!

No, Chevy's ok, its too core a brand. I like Buick always have but if one make had to go, it should have been Buick(regardless how well it does in China). I only say this because as someone previously said, Cadillac is the Luxury mark so Buick is a bit redundant. They could have kept Pontiac alive as a more performance division, even with the G5. Bear in mind i wouldn't like seeing any brand bite the dust, the same applies to Mercury.

The "death" of the Pontiac brand, and years ago Oldsmobile and Plymouth. When will the attitude of automotive world change? Why does each company have to produce the "same" car but with a different badge on it. The Pontiac Grand Prix, Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Buick Regal all were the same car underneath but a different piece of trim here or there. It continues today and in time those that continue will fall as well. The world [of cars] is changing and people want change. Stop making the same thing and calling it something different...oh and stop making junk!
