Ferrari World Abu Dhabi opens its doors [video]

Ferrari theme park features a Formula Rossa rollercoaster and a scaled-down versions of GT and F1 cars for kids

Ferrari World Abu Dhabi has finally opened its doors to the public.

The first full-fledged theme park by an automaker began operating on schedule on October 28, three years after construction on the project began.

It's main attraction is, of course, the Formula Rossa rollercoaster ride where riders can get quite a speed rush with its acceleration to 240 km/h (149 mph) in less than five seconds. The height of the ride peaks at 52 meters (171 ft) and the track is 2.07 km (1.29 miles) long.

Also available for kids is the Junior GT, where children can race in a reduced-scale F430 GT Spider. Youngsters can also opt to participate in the Junior Grand Prix race with scaled-down F1-style race cars from Ferrari. Sounds like fun even for adults.

And, of course, there is a touch of the home country with Italian restaurants and a virtual areal tour of Italy.

If the park is successful, Ferrari World may expand in the future with other parks elsewhere. Reports had it last year that a site in Valancia, Spain was being considered.

Yas Marina, 27 October - Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, the first ever theme park dedicated to the Prancing Horse, was presented this afternoon as a preview exclusively to the international press. Today's planned soft opening to the public was put back to a future date to be decided in sign of mourning for the passing away of Sheik Saqr bin Mohammed Al-Qasimi, Emir of Ras al-Khaimah.

"First of all I would like, on behalf of both myself and everyone at Ferrari, to express our sincere condolences to the government and the population of the United Arab Emirates for their tragic loss," - said the Chairman of Ferrari, Luca di Montezemolo. "Then I would like to thank the nation and all those who made it possible to make this dream - a unique theme park dedicated to theworld of Ferrari - a reality. Congratulations to everyone involved."

"The park just 4 years ago was a project, an idea, maybe even a too ambitious idea, is now a fantastic reality. Everyone at Ferrari is grateful to the people who have worked without rest for the last two years to make it happen.

Abu Dhabi is a great city that constantly looks to the future, and we are very proud of our partners who share with Ferrari the same passion, the same vision, the same will to go beyond.

This park combines innovative technology and tradition, it is dedicated not only to Ferrari fans and car enthusiastic, but to the whole family; there are attractions for kids, men and women. It has also the real touch of Ferrari: how things really are for us, with our exclusive GT road cars and racing cars, but also our history and our cultural background. Something else that was crucial for us was for the Park to be a symbol, built actively on the heritage that Italy represents for the world. We are pleased to see that all this has become reality, and that the excitement - like the roller coaster that makes you feel like a Formula One driver - goes hand-in-hand with messages that perfectly combine having a good time with the reality represented by the passion for Ferrari.

We also like to think that this Ferrari Theme park can be a small contribution to reinforcing the bridge between our two cultures.

And finally I would like to express my personal thanks to His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, and to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi; for their guidance and support. Warm thanks are also due to Khaldoon Al Mubarak, and to Ahmed Ali Al Sayegh, for their invaluable support."

Do the rides spontaneously ignite into flames? How about shattering into millions of pieces while sliding sideways into lightpoles?

Something is just wrong with the fact that this theme park is located in Abu Dhabi instead of in Maranello where it should be.

Jeez... What a waste of money...time...and energy... How lame can someone be...you'd probably be bored after 1 hour...coz the only colors you would be seeing is RED, YELLOW and BLACK. Now you know where all our money goes...into the pockets of the Super Rich (but stupid) Middle Eastern Oil Kings... If they have spent their money on Renewable Energy like Hydrogen Cold Fusion Reactors...we can solve the Global Energy Crisis and end Poverty by now...Ohhh...Wait...why would they want to do that... They dont really care about the Global Energy Crisis, Overpopulation, Poverty, Famine...or maybe they dont even know about it...silly me...My Bad

I really dont think its fair to blame Abu Dhabi for something like not investing in renewable energy sources. The whole world needs to invest more in that. In fact, giving that Abu Dhabi main income is from oil and also considering the size of the city I find it impressive that they support big renewable energy initiatives such as Masdar and Also be choosen as the Headquarter for International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)

Mmmm...something about the sound effect of the Formula Rossa just isn't right. It sounds like it's straining... Hate to admit it...but as lame as it the theme park sounds I think I'd probably visit it when I'm in the Emirates...I've been to a theme park based on some cartoons starring a mouse before...why not a car??? It might even have better food...

Modern art and modern cars are inextricably linked in one unfortunate sense; they are having their soul taken out by commercialisation!
