Minor exterior tweaks, completely redesigned cabin

Dodge has released the first images of the facelifted 2011 Avenger.

Essentially a rebadged Chrysler 200, the Avenger features a modified front fascia, a revised grille, and new taillights.

Inside, the cabin is completely redesigned with a new dashboard, a revised center stack, and more comfortable seats. Other tweaks include a new instrument cluster, a sporty steering wheel, and "soft-touch" armrests.

Under the hood, two engines are available. The Pentastar 3.6-liter V6 churns out 283 hp (211 kW / 287 PS), while the entry-level 2.4-liter four-cylinder will likely produce 173 hp (129 kW / 175 PS). A six-speed automatic transmission will be standard on the V6 and optional on the four-cylinder.

To improve handling, engineers "retuned or redesigned virtually every part of the suspension." More specifically, the ride height has been reduced (12mm front / 6mm rear), the track has been increased, and stickier tires have been fitted.

No word on pricing, but look for the updated Avenger to start arriving at dealerships later this year.

An All-new Dynamic for the 2011 Dodge Avenger: A Mid-size Sedan Designed, Engineered for Spirited Performance

Dodge today introduced the new Dodge Avenger, totally overhauled for 2011 with an all-new interior, a redesigned exterior and performance attributes that put the "fun" in functional. A new powertrain lineup and completely redesigned and retuned suspension mean drivers will experience Dodge's fun-to-drive dynamics in a front-wheel-drive mid-size sedan.

The Avenger's "fun to drive" quotient rises exponentially for 2011 with a significantly upgraded suspension to give drivers agile, confident, handling performance in all driving situations, whether it's a spirited adventure on twisty roads or an emergency maneuver.

Dodge engineers retuned or redesigned virtually every part of the suspension for 2011, including 26 of 30 suspension bushings. The suspension and the geometry were completely rethought. The track is an inch wider, tire width increased from 215 to 225 millimeters and the vehicle is 12 millimeters lower in the front and 6 millimeters in the rear for a more aggressive stance. Customers will feel more confident when driving the new Avenger because of less body roll, less vehicle shake, improved isolation, better steering precision, response and feel and the increased grip of new premium tires.

A new and improved powertrain lineup also contributes to the 2011 Avenger's driving experience. The vehicles has a standard 2.4-liter World Gas Engine, which has been recalibrated and is now available mated to a new smooth-shifting six-speed transmission for an exceptionally fun and fuel-efficient driving experience. Avenger customers also can opt for the new Pentastar V-6 engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission that gives customers the best of both worlds - best-in-class 283 horsepower (an increase of 20 percent compared with the engine it replaces) and 260 lb.-ft. of torque (an increase of 12 percent) combined with competitive fuel economy.

New exterior styling features clean, smooth aggressive lines. The new fascia sports the new signature Dodge Brand "split crosshair" grille, while an aggressive lower fascia completes the Dodge look from top to bottom.

The Chrysler Group LLC's Interior Design Studio also worked its magic on the new 2011 Avenger. The all-new instrument panel, bezels, gauge faces and new Dodge steering wheel transform the driver seat into a cockpit-like experience. Upgraded seats incorporate more cushion material and revised spring geometry. Dodge Avenger also features several new two-tone interior color schemes, new leather and cloth seating materials and accent stitching. Owners can select from these schemes to design a vehicle that matches their lifestyle needs.

Designers developed the 2011 Dodge Avenger with new "soft touch" armrests and instrument panels, new, premium interior finishes for touch points that are not only pleasing to the touch but also to the eye. They also redesigned the heating and cooling outlets in the instrument panel to make them more appealing and better functioning. The 2011 Dodge Avenger also offers one of the quietest cabins in the segment with 45 new or upgraded sound-deadening treatments integrated throughout the vehicle.

Clever features include new ambient interior lighting and a new multi-function three-spoke Dodge steering wheel with integrated controls that allows drivers to operate the radio, cruise control, hands-free phone and other vehicle functions while keeping their hands on the wheel. Available cool technology includes voice command functions for hands-free phones, integrated USB port for streaming music, navigation and memo record, an iPod/MP3 jack, Bluetooth streaming music; Gracenote music identification; a hard drive that stores approximately 6,700 songs and remote start.

The standard mid-size sedan segment is the largest vehicle segment in the United States, with more than 1.6 million vehicles sold in 2009. The 2011 Dodge Avenger is uniquely positioned as an alternative for consumers looking for a sedan with more style, personality and performance than the segment is traditionally known for.

The 2011 Dodge Avenger will be built at the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant in Sterling Heights, Mich., and will arrive in dealerships in the fourth quarter this year.

Nahhh, its actually getting much better, their cars look like they have balls, and now they have a bit of performance to back it up. For us Dodge fans, Dodge has more work to do, but its definitely a dream and not a nightmare.

Exzctly, we rent a but load of these at alamo, and the only other car thats so.... depressing is the Sebring and sebring convertible. love how after for months of rental use the sliver paint wears off the door armrests , Dodge why are wasting money building crap cars.

No offense Benz boy, but while the Sebring is the same car as the Avenger, its much, much uglier in an awkwardly boring kind of way. I don't dispute what you say, but the Sebring looks like crap...even if you hate the Avengers styling, its no where near as weird as the Sebring.

Because for some of us, poorer folk than an obviously upper class fellow like yourself, we want a Dodge...and driving this car in Winter with 10 cm of snow on the ground is much easier than its RWD cousin the Challenger/Charger, not say its "easy" but this is a car with adequate performance that can be driven year round in places like Quebec where Old Man winter messes with you daily.. Love all 3 cars but this car undercuts the cost of those 2 as well, despite the obvious performance disadvantages. So there are some reasons where this car sells.

In my part of Quebec you have your Spring\Summer\Fall Car and your 1000$ winter beater. You don't have to be rich to own one and it saves your (good car) from the salt. Anyway how is the dodge a particularly good winter car? It probably has an open front diff so it will get stuck like any other fwd car. I'll stick with my APV & DS-1 Dunlops.

@ Dolomight, 1, never said its good winter car, said its easier to drive and park than the RWD cousin the charger, especially if you don't own a house. 2) owning a winter beater is one way to go, but thats provided you can afford the insurance on two cars, however cheap the beaters insurance is and you can afford storage over winter for your summer car again if you don't have a house and you would rather not leave your "saturday night special" car parked on the street over winter, having to move it from one side to other when they have to clear the street. 3) from time to time you will get stuck with any FWD car as i have, but there's ways around it, and getting out of it As for the salt you're right, but even a "crap" car like this will see it properly/fully rust-proofed every winter in my hand, i have seen the adverse effects of not having it done on my current car. Having two cars just isn't an option, not right now and probably for some time regardless how many more hours i stack on.

Also the only really cheaper Dodge than the Avenger is the Caliber, other than the SRT-4, terrible car.

@ Xanavi, from what I gather you live in an apartment like 10 mins away from downtown Mtl, I'm guessing cote des neige. Anyway good modern RWD has a limited slip diff, like my buddy's GMC Canyon has a posi-trac. Also you can throw a couple of sandbags into your trunk\truck bed to increase your traction. Just don't try rwd drifting from nov to march and you should be ok.

Cote Des Neige was a solid guess, but no, i did used to live in a similar area for my first feww years of driving, so good guess. Good idea about sandbags, i wouldn't necessarily avoid a RWD car, cause i do prefer the Charger but just some things i would think about then again i realise, Chargers do come with 4WD optional. I would never try drifting even in summer, ive never really been a fan, more convention grip driving is my taste(not that i'ld push such limits on city streets).

All your typical hate of American cars aside, this is actually a solid car because it looks like a strong Dodge the way it should and with 287hp on tap, its no slouch either. You don't have to like it, but your blind comments only make you seem ignorant. FIAT bought Chrysler to take benefit from some of Dodges larger cars and to gain a foothold in the American market by not having to build a dealer chain. Hell they even modified the suspension, tweaked the settings and swapped the rubber, its an all around improvement....i'ld definitely consider buying this car new or used in a year or so, if i don't/can't opt for a Charger.

Fiat has not bought Chrysler. Fiat has at present a 20% ownership stake given to them to partner with Chrysler after the US Government bailout. There are conditions to be bet met that will increase Fiat's stake. Fiat and it's CEO have stated repeatedly that unlike Daimler-Chrysler there will be true integration and that is one the pre-existing conditions. They will work together like Renault & Nissan. This first year the combined company will generate 2 billion is savings...not bad so far...wait till we see the new cars at the end of next year...

Good correction Autoafficianado, wrong wording on my part, i was using the same wording as above by someone else, flawed on my part. Also to gain that 20%, they didn't actually "buy" stake in Chrysler if i remember correctly, that 20% was a trade of technology and research. One thing to really look out for is Chryslers plan of using a Fiat model as a base for a compact sedan which Chrysler as a whole really needs to obtain. It definitely does seem like a more involved alliance/team than Daimlers was. I remember 5-6 months ago seeing a clip on a car show in the States where Fiat had put a 599 GT and a couple other Ferrari's in a Chrysler booth, so its a pretty clear alliance that FIAT doesn't hide as much as Benz wanted to(as much as i like Benz, it wasn't a true alliance like you said).

283hp is serious power for a car in this segment, kudos to that and the new interior. but they can't do much to make a fundamentally flawed exterior design much better.
