Production Rally Fighter set to debut at SEMA [video]

Drops the BMW diesel for a V8 petrol

Local Motors has announced plans to introduce the production Rally Fighter at SEMA.

Developed as an open source project, the Rally Fighter was created by a community of enthusiasts who effectively designed the vehicle from the ground up. More importantly, the open source nature of the car means that "chassis and body data is available free for download so modding is easy."

In final production trim, the Rally Fighter boasts a powered-coated tubular steel space frame chassis, an off-road suspension (with a detachable front stabilizer bar and up to 20 inches of travel), and a high performance braking system.

To reduce weight, key components (nose, rear, underbelly and floor pans) are made from carbon fiber. Furthermore, the Rally Fighter has a vinyl-wrapped exterior which is 12 lbs (5 kg) lighter than a painted one. All told, the car is to tip the scales at approximately 3,200 lbs (1,451 kg).

Under the hood, power is provided by a 6.2-liter V8 engine with 430 hp (321 kW / 436 PS) and 424 lb-ft (574 Nm) of torque. It is connected to an automatic transmission which sends power to the rear wheels.

Pricing information hasn't been finalized (beyond a $50,000 estimate), but customers can reserve a Rally Fighter for a $99 deposit.

hmm, interesting concept. I sure like the idea of having a street legal rally car, but I don't think it can make good on that promise if it is only RWD. This seems like a rather large oversight on their part and along with the Honda Civic taillights leaves me thinking this looks a little unpolished for an estimated $50,000 price tag, but still a ton of fun, no doubt.

Several classes of Baja/SCORE trucks are RWD, as are many Dakar rally-raid trucks. In particular, prerunners are always RWD, as are the Baja Bugs and Trophy Trucks. 4WD is desirable for S2000 or WRC rallies, but this is a completely different concept for completely different types of rallying.

Well, it needs 4WD and a sequential box to be a rally machine or a manual box

Is it a bit on the soft side, having a massive 6.2 L engine and only 570nm of torque, and with no AWD, and.... oh dear, 4-speed auto ? If it's 5 or 6 speed auto it would still feel fine if it's not manual. Anyway it's a very cool car indeed.

love the idea and the car, but I agree with the rest that it needs to drop the Civic tail lights and needs a manual gearbox. They should have 4WD as an option if they find it to be too costly or too heavy. I think they should've kept the BMW diesel or they need to dial up the torque on this one.

Let me guess, you've never driven fast offroad? I have. A manual transmission would be pure idiocy; you want both hands on the wheel in case you hit a rock or a rut that could wrench the wheel. A manual transmission is great on the road, but not at high speed offroad.

Is this a bad joke? Theres nothing "rally" about this car. It?s an old Baja racer prototype, thats it. Americans.... strange that their shoppingcarts doesn?t have a heavy v8 with an 4speed automatic dated from the fifties, and rwd. How about thinking out of the box for a change? Perhaps it would result in something fast and effective.

The Bowler Nemesis would crush this in a proper competition.

Are you honestly proposing that Baja trophy trucks are in any way less technologically advanced, fast, or effective than WRC cars? No, they couldn't run a WRC rally very effectively, but a WRC car would be a pile of scrap before mile 50 of the Baja 1000. Different tools, different jobs - and if you think that a Trophy Truck or most other Baja classes are technologically inferior to a WRC car, you're simply an ignorant Euro fanboy, nothing more. And what's this about "50s transmission"? You don't need 6 speeds offroad. What you do need is simplicity, durability, and high strength. Same with the 6.2 V8 - which is a brand-new and very advanced Ford powerplant. Oh, and find me a Bowler Nemesis that sells for $50k or thereabouts. I'll be waiting for quite a long time, but take as much as you need....

It looks like it's from whacky races. I like the design.

It's more a desert racer with on-road chops than straight-rally. This is the reason for RWD. Because it's pretty lightweight and powerful you'll find it can rally, too. Ariel (LM!) aferreira@Local-Motors.com
