FT-86 will be sold under the Scion brand in the United States market

There's lots of news and rumors to be had about Toyota and Subaru's upcoming FT-86 Coupe but not much in terms of what it will actually look like.

These latest spy shots are of a mule for the FT-86 recently caught testing in damp weather Germany. We spotted a similar prototype at the Nürburgring last year and another one doing some hot-weather testing in Death Valley over the summer.

The FT-86 will be sold globally, except in the United States, badged as a Toyota and likely with a 2.0 liter boxer engine. The Subaru version will be fitted with a 2.0 liter turbocharged engine producing 260 hp (194 kW / 264 PS). It will not be an all-wheel drive, though, due to cost-saving measures.

In the United States market the FT-86 will be sold under the Scion and brand and come with a 2.5 liter Boxer engine and a sale price of around $25,000.

The FT-86 is expected to debut sometime in 2012.

I hoped that Toyota will not mash too much on their good-looking FT-86 concept and as for Subaru, I hoped they can get the design right. I hoped with bated breath for these cars to impress me.

I would want to clarify my earlier comment, for those who thinks that I'm referring the above picture as a pre-production model. In fact, I understood those pictures to be test-mules and hoped by commenting that the cars will look great. In the case of Toyota, I wished the production FT-86 will look just the same as the namesake's beautiful concept and for Subaru, make sure that the Scooby looks more distinctive in its own right. I hoped I have cleared the misunderstanding.

I'm disappointed with some of you guys; I thought you're supposed to be auto geeks? If you can't suss out test-mules from actual production, God help us then! The Japs are having the last laugh and with this car, Toyota's boring image will get a shot in the arm and ditto Scooby!
