SL is one of the last models on the track before the close of the testing season at N?rburgring

Here are the latest spy shots of the next-generation Mercedes-Benz SL model, one of the last cars getting a workout on the Nürburgring as the testing season comes to a close there.

The SL is still wearing enough camo to mask its major design changes. But what they can't hide is the flatter nose that's become a distinguishing mark of the new Mercedes-Benz design paradigm. Other than that, the SL is staying close to its classic body shape.

New on the SL will also be an extensive use of reinforced plastics and carbon fiber components to help reduce weight and improve agility, performance and fuel-economy. Parent company Daimler earlier this year announced a deal with Japanese textile maker Toray Industries to help develop those materials specifically for this next-generation SL.

Engines expected, although it is a little early to tell, are the 3.5 liter V6 and the new 4.6 liter twin-turbo V8 from Benz's ever evolving stable of power plants.

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz SL will debut at the earliest sometime in 2011.

This article is depressing. By now we should be seeing unclad cars. I cant imagine an SL with a v-6 but... Thats why I have an SL63 AMG . I cant wait for the revised body to see what it looks like.

no need to imagine it; 6-cylinder sl models have existed for decades along with the v8 and v12 models. in fact, every single generation of the sl was offered with a 6-cylinder version (inline-6 earlier on, then v6 models more recently).

It looks promising. Is it just me, or does this further the movement of the grill once again becoming the new bumper?

Nice to see that the side mirrors aren't attached to the windows anymore. But this car needs to be lighter, atleast some 200kg

There is an unclad picture of the 2013 SL in this months issue of Automobile magazine on page 16. If in fact it is , not a concept I can assure you it does not resemble the E class.

I thought the be all end all car to have was the SLS Gullwing and it is super impressive to say the least. I was at the dealership today and they had one that hadnt been sold , I politely asked if I could sit in it,since I have a couple of benzes they said yes. I was surprised , the cabin really is like being in a small rocketship with doors down and it is beyond cool, one of the reasons I wanted to sit in the car is because I am 6ft 2 and weigh about 235lbs. with the seat all the way down and back my head barely cleared the roof, and sadly , when I went to get out of the car, it almost took an act of god or a tow truck to get my fat ass out. So the point to my disertation is I will be staying in the SL Class for some time to come. Cant wait for this to come out.
