2011 BMW X3: In Depth
Bigger, bolder, better
BMW has released new information about the 2011 X3.
Designed to be elegant and dramatic, the redesigned model boasts an evolutionary appearance which has a clear resemblance to the X5 and X1. Notable styling details include a prominent grille, a stronger character line, a roof-mounted spoiler, and distinctive T-shaped taillights.
While the previous model had a chintzy interior, the 2011 X3 has a cabin worthy of the BMW badge. It features high-quality materials, an improved design, and a generous boot capacity of 550 liters (19.4 cubic feet). The latter can be expanded to 1,600 liters (56.5 cubic feet) thanks to 40/20/40 folding rear seats.
Options include GPS navigation (with an 8.8-inch display), dual-zone automatic climate control, a panorama sunroof, a premium sound system and an automatic tailgate. Additional choices include a Head-up Display, Adaptive Cornering Headlights, High-beam Assistant, a rear-view camera (with Top View) and ConnectedDrive which "enables unrestricted use of the Internet within the vehicle" as well as "comprehensive integration of the Apple iPhone and other smartphones."
Under the hood, a variety of engines will be offered. The xDrive20d has a four-cylinder diesel engine which churns out 135 kW (184 PS / 181 hp) and 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) of torque. It accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 8.5 seconds and has a top speed of 210 km/h (130 mph). In terms of efficiency, the 20d consumes an average of 5.6 l/100 km (42 mpg US) and emits 149 grams of CO2 per kilometer.
In the xDrive28i, power is provided by a 3.0-liter six-cylinder petrol engine with 190 kW (258 PS / 255 hp) and 310 Nm (229 lb-ft) of torque. Performance is acceptable as 0-100 km/h takes 6.9 seconds and the top speed is 210 km/h (130 mph). On the upside, combined fuel economy is 9.0 l/100km (26 mpg US) and CO2 emissions are 210 g/km.
Of course if power is what you crave, you can order the range-topping xDrive35i. It boasts a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder petrol engine with 225 kW (306 PS / 302 hp) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. Thanks to this beefy power plant, the crossover accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 5.7 seconds and has top speed of 245 km/h (152 mph). Backed up by an eight-speed automatic with Stop/Start technology, combined fuel consumption is rated at 8.8 l/100km (26.7 mpg US) while CO2 emissions are 204 grams per kilometer.
Since all models are equipped with xDrive (all-wheel drive), BMW went to great lengths to maximize fuel efficiency. To do this, engineers installed brake energy regeneration, EPS Electric Power Steering, demand-controlled ancillary components, and low-rolling resistance tires.
While those changes will likely dilute the driving experience somewhat, BMW offers a sports automatic transmission (with shift paddles on the steering wheel), Performance Control, and Dynamic Damper control with Normal, Sport and Sport+ modes.
