 BMW X4 due in 2014 - X4 M in the works too

X4 will be aimed squarely at the Porsche Cajun

More details have surfaced on the production of the BMW X4.

According to a report by AutoWeek, BMW will produce the X4 at its Spartanburg, South Carolina plant in the United States and be priced in the same range as premium wagons in that market. BMW believes the success of the X6 has proven that consumers will buy a car that is more stylish than practical. The U.S.-market will be an important one for the X4. BMW will be expanding its production capacity at the Spartanburg plant from 150,000 units to 240,000 units per year to accomodate the manufacturing of the X4. The model is scheduled for launch in 2014.

The X4 will be taking on the likes of the upcoming Porsche Cajun in a new luxury, compact SUV-coupe segment emerging in the marketplace.

"This car [Porsche Cajun] is motivating our development department at the moment," said a BMW source in the AutoWeek story.

The X4 will come with a selection of both 4- and 6-cylinder petrol/gasoline and diesel engines coupled to either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 7-speed dual-clutch one. BMW's 8-speed Steptronic transmission will also be an option.

BMW will offer the X4 exclusively as an all-wheel drive (xDrive) just as it does the X3 model. It's suspension, lowered and with new components and settings, will be tuned for a more sporty performance than on the X3 with which it will share a platform.

A BMW X4 M is also planned with a twin-turbo straight -6 and a 7-speed sequential dual-clutch gearbox from BMW's M performance division.

What the X4 will look like is another matter. Previously reports have described it as a baby X6. But a sketch of the X4 published by AutoWeek (see source link below), and the artist rendering of the X4 we have here, is of a 2-door coupe-like SUV - similar to the upcoming Porsche Cajun.

"The design is not finalized, but we know the direction and it will likely surprise," a BMW source said to AutoWeek.

Don't get me wrong but I love BMW and I do own a Z4. yes, it will sell but look at what they are doing with the X-series. The design is just too much. example is the X3, the tail lights looks like it came from a chop shop and please don't get me started with the X6.

Come on guys - Different needs, different models... I currently run a BMW 1-series and love the small hatch and for my current needs, nothing get's even close... But when the misses and I are gonna have a little one, I would like some more space in the back without going for a large car. I am actually a bit tempted by the X1 - X3,5,6 are way to big for my taste and the X1 still has a bit more aggressive design than a boring 3-touring. Just because your needs are not for it, doesn't mean any of us other don't have the lust for something like the one above (But okay with the current lineup it gives sense, but one more X? Hmm..)

That's soo ridicolous, how many other useless models does BMW want to build? One day, we will have a range from X1 to X7 or what? Which just means the normal BMW 1 to 7 series with a higher chassis.

That's pretty much the case already; the X1, X3, X5, X6... That said they wouldn't make any of those if there wasn't a market for each one of them.

That's the most depressing thing. There are people out there who actually buy into all this niche shit and cause more of it to exist...

In 2014 BMW will launch X4, in 2015 - X2, in 2016 - X7, in 2017 X8... BMW has already too much crossovers with doubtful market positioning. They just making competitors to themselves.

it's called market research , that why BMW is doing great and Pontiac is dead.

Useless X models ( Not all of them but most) Insted of the X why couldn't they just build the new 2012 CS ( New 8 Series 4 door coupe) I would have prefered that instead of the new X models.

BMW lacks a true halo car nowadays. Nothing like the M1 or Z8 since it was done in 2003. Go work a true super car, instead of these pointless SAV as you call it.

the "BMW Vision EfficientDynamics"? if it is a porsche 918 competitor in all ways, then it is. from what the spec looks, it is not.
October 15, 2010 10:30 pm
 dayday dayday
Vision Efficient Dynamics is the concept. i100 will be the green one. M100 will be the Performance one. and it will competet with 918.

Agree on the Halo car. I think it is even more important to come up with a coupe that is more desirable than the 1 and 3 series attempts. The 3 jobbers just look wrong. The car is one of the biggest botches ever of trying to cheaply convert a car that was designed as a four door into one with two. The one series is kind of cool, but the only advantage it offers over the 3's are less unfortunate looks. In all other respects it is just looses the advantage of being not being a bigger car without picking up any of the advantages normally associated with being a smaller car. I'd like a "2" series coupe that doesn't look like just another scaled model of the rest of the BMW car line.
