BMW 1-Series M Coupe - new details released
BMW 1-Series M Coupe

A modern homage to the original M3

BMW has released new information about the 1-Series M Coupe.

First and foremost, the company has confirmed power will be provided by a bi-turbo 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine with approximately 340 hp (254 kW / 345 PS). It will be mated exclusively to a six-speed manual transmission, so flappy-paddle fans need not apply.

The car will weigh around 1500 kg (3,307 lbs) and feature a chassis, braking system and rear differential similar to the M3. These tweaks will enable the M Coupe to be ten seconds faster around the Nordschleife than the previous M3 (E46).

According to Albert Biermann, Head of Development at BMW M GmbH, "The 1-Series M Coupe is completely in the tradition of the first BMW M3. It is compact, focused on the essential, and presents outstanding driving dynamics. In addition, it opens the door to BMW M - in particular its price will also make it more accessible than our other products."

The 1-Series M Coupe will be unveiled in December, before it debuts at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Sales are scheduled to begin in the summer of 2011 and pricing will be "between the 135i Coupe and the M3 Coupe, with a clear tendency towards the 135i."

It must be wonderful to drive.. I am not gonna buy it, but desperate to drive it.. Moreover, I like the idea that it comes only with a manual gearbox.

Hope it has an oilcooler. "in tradition of the first M3" should read "in tradition of the first M3 with 3 addition 200lbs passengers on board". 600 lbs heavier is nothing to sneeze at. Please offer a Lightweight version for track use.

Totally agree, if it were "focused on the essential" as told Albert, it would weight 200 to 300 kg less

Those turbos and cc's should smooth that out...

true but for such a small niche market, I doubt they ever will. 95% (guestimate) will be completely happy with it as it is. Simply strip all air-con, airbags, rear seats out yourself. Sell them 2nd hand.

This will be a great car, but agreed - 1500kgs is a lot and too much for sure. Anyway this is what M badge deserves, not stupid X6Ms.

would have been nice to have a bit of a trademark bulge in the bonnet :)

Did you notice the front calipers? The same 2 piston type from an M3...not good. I don't understand why they are not using the 6 piston Brembo units from the 135.

Another great mystery. My e36 would warp rotors like no other car. Even the new camaro uses Brembo's !

Your rotors don't warp, they are cast iron. They would crack before they would want to warp. What happens is you transfer pad material on to the rotor when you overheat it and come to a complete stop. Thats the reason why when you bed your break pads you never come to a complete stop. As for this car, its got impressive performance for its weight but I would much rather see this thing at 3000lbs. Nothing e30 about it imo. For a street car around town it must be a blast for sure though.

Great car. I don't understand some of the people's comments, that the car is to heavy with it's 1600kg. It has got a 340bhp which isn't actually a low power. BMW doesn't target it to be lightweight track killer. It must be a fast, small, everyday car with all the goodies like aircon., sat-nav etc. I have got 2006 XK 4.2 which weights around 1700kg and has 298hp. It is a very quick and comfortable car to drive. I don't need more power in it for everyday use.

BavaraMS- while I agree with most of what you said, my e36 m3 warped rotors. I ran cooling ducts, bedded pads and worked with turnermotorsports regarding this problem only 2 piece rotors solved the issue. Now the Honda s2000, it cracks rotors
