Audi may take Quattro Concept to production - plan in the works

Production would be limited to a very small series of between 200 and 500 units

Audi is developing a production plan for the Quattro Concept as the automaker considers building a limited series of the model, according to a report by Autocar.

"We are rethinking standard processes to make it possible. We know how to engineer it already," said Stefan Reil, chief of development at Quattro GmbH, Audi's performance division, in an interview with the British car magazine.

The Quattro Concept is based on the RS5 and was created to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the original Audi Quattro all-wheel drive system. It is powered by a 2.5 liter, 5-cylinder turbocharged engine producing 300 kW (408 PS / 402 hp) and 480 Nm (354 lb-ft) of torque. The car weights in at just 1,300 kilograms (2,866 lbs) and manages the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in an easy 3.9 seconds.

But Audi faces some challenges in taking the Quattro to production.

First off, Audi's partner in the Quattro Concept development is ItalDesign, which currently has no production capability. And Audi has little experience in building specialty editions in very low volume and it can't set a price that is too high.

"We need feedback to see if it is possible. Audi has no heritage in building 200-500 cars that are really exotic. But it won't be over €100,000 (£87,600/$139,000)," Reil said in the story.

Audi may get some help, though, from sister brand Lamborghini, which has a lot of experience in producing supercars with lots of carbon fiber components such as the Quattro has.

Said Reil, "This car and Lamborghini are in the same exotic corner."

Yes!!!! Produce it, please!!! Leave it lightweight and extreme as much as possible. Make it for a skilled drivers, without ESP or ASR with standard half or full roolbar.

As a design study, how fantastic. The rear brings back the Testarosa and Firebird-very agressive yet modern/retro. The thick rear pillar gives substance to what is a smallish sports car. The front end goes a completely different route with swoopy aerodynamic elements that curve up to a pointed nose for a front end. It looses presence and looks much more inexpensive than the product really is.

great, this is going to be a rocket on road, like Nissan GT-R but lightweight and therefor more nimble!

Ok someone needs to take this thing to pikes peak and race it. Or better yet, get a Group B revival going.

I dont know why they wouldnt produce it - Audi want and need to take chunks out of Porsche and BMW - I can think of no better way right now... this is lining up to be an amazing vehicle.

I think that this is a really nice car. I think that making it in extremely limited numbers is a bad idea. The original was a mid-priced car that anyone could buy if they plunked down the reasonable purchase price. A turbo I5 just isn't a mega-exclusive package. Why try to make it that way with a huge price and low production? This would be a wonderful "production halo car" with packaging and a price that is truly like the original. It doesn't have the stuff to really live in the exotic realm.

If this car is green-lighted for limited or mass production, it will be one of the most interesting retro-modern cars to be produced - and sought after.

To those who are complaining about why the quattro Concept is only being built in limited numbers... please look at that price again! ?100,000 (?87,600/$139,000)? It's a beautiful car, but the number of people who can afford this car, or even chose it over a RS5 (or R8 for that matter!), will be quite limited... Had it been a lot cheaper, then I think this car would have sold like hot cakes.

Making it add up to ?100,000 (?87,600/$139,000) makes no sense to me. Audi can certainly put out a turbo-I5, Quattro with the same sheet metal for about 1/4th that price. I really like the car, but if I'm going out to spend 140K on a car, it doesn't make my top ten list. I think that there is real room in the market for fun, unique coupes in the 25-40K range. The current ones just aren't that desirable.

Please make it mass produced! Maybe Audi are holding back the number because of the TT RS, but this is much better than that! Drop the TT RS from the range, and fill the gap with this model.

Love the concept but no way would i pay anything over $85,000 fully loaded for this.At that price range there are cars much more prestigous and better performing.Lately Bmw,Audi, are shooting themselves with overpricing their cars and this 'limited edition"BS.

I couldn't agree more. I'll even throw Ford and several other makers into the "missing the boat, big time fray". There is a whole bunch of us car guys in our 40's who are doing pretty well in our careers. We want and can afford something more desirable than a Camry or a Taurus. We either have a family or are paying for a house with one income. We also have other interests in life, or we are smarter with our money, than to just make ends meet so we can buy a $40,000-70,000 quickly depreciating ride. There is just about nothing desirable for us to buy. There are a bunch of pretty much identical, insipid V6/FWD jobs. There are Mustangs and Camaros with live axles, claustrophobic interiors and seat heights about six inches above the floor boards. I'd like a RWD/I6 or flat six (rear bias quattro drive great, too) in an upright coupe configuration. I don't need $$$magnesium engine blocks and styling that was a disaster seven years ago, when it was fresh. The same goes for carbon fiber and being in "the same exotic corner as Lamborghini". The times have changed for good, and the car companies have not seen the reality. The original Quattro formula is right for our times, not this one.

This iconically white Quattro Concept must be put into production as it would showcase how Audi has reinvented, redefined and rejuvenated itself contemporarily since the original version ran riot on the rally stage over 30 years ago! I heard its trademark five-pot burble on the Motor Trend video being driven lightly on a mountain road; what an adrenaline rush!
