Mercedes outsells Lexus in U.S. - takes lead in premium sales battle
2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe

Mercedes-Benz sales were up 22 percent for the year through September while Lexus sales rose a more modest 9 percent

The race is definitely a heated one for the title of top-selling luxury brand in the United States.

The lead now belongs to Mercedes-Benz which surpassed the usual leader Lexus by outselling the Japanese brand in the month of September and now leading in 2010 premium sales overall.

Sales of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, including the Sprinter van, are up 22 percent year-to-date for a total of 165,427 units. Lexus sales have risen a more modest 9 percent with 162,438 units sold so far this year through the end of September. BMW has also seen a 9 percent rise in its sales this year, selling 157,464 units in the same 9-month period. Overall, auto industry sales in the United States have been up 10 percent for the 9-month period in 2010.

But it's still a close race - Lexus had led Mercedes-Benz through the end of August by a mere 737 units.

"Lexus has been by far the luxury leader in this market and now Mercedes and BMW have closed that gap pretty rapidly," said Joe Barker, an auto industry analyst from IHS Automotive.

In comparison its a no-brainer... why someone takes the Lexus is beyond me...the whole thing about Toyota being the most reliable thing ever created BS really sunk into the majority of people

1. They were much more reliable a couple of years ago when Germany's big 3 were plagued by build quality issues. They're still pretty reliable, you're just falling for the media hype surrounding the recalls. 2. A typical Lexus vehicle is generally lower priced than its respective German competitor. 3. Some people like the dull driving/handling characteristics of a Lexus 4. A lot of Lexus vehicles come better equipped at a lower price than German competition; not everyone's a hardcore car enthusiast. People look for value. All in all it's down to personal preferences. You'd understand if you weren't so ignorant all the time.

The ES aside, at least Lexus takes the time to engineer new chassis for their cars, which is more than some so called premium brands. A civic with an Acura badge is hardly pushing engineering prowess. Not to take anything away from Benz though, they are the original luxury brand.

Although I like BMW and Audi a little more, I have to say well done Mercedes. While I know people have different preferences but I will never buy a Lexus, they are ok cars but if I want something luxury, I will get the real German stuff. On the other hand, hyundai genesis, which tries to copy a copy, is complete trash.

Whilst I would prefer a Merc over Lexus any day, they include van sales!! hardly a fair comparison of sales is it?
